I want to purchase a linux compatible printer preferably scanner. Ihave a budget of about Rs 5000.
I have in mind Hp laserjet 1018 or 1200 . The other alternative is samsung ML 1610.which one would work well.
As an alternative I may take inkjet MFD (Printer+scanner) from HP. will the scanner work on linux (openSuse 10.2). COuld some one suggest a model.

I have a Epson C43 SX printer, well supported.
Please check here BEFORE you decide

Link edited, sorry wrong link
Also check vendor specific lists to ensure out-of-the-box-support for the hardware. For example, for an Open SuSE user like me I would check

Brother printers also offer linux support. It's almost as good as HP but at a lesser price.

All HP printers are awesome..in my university we have a HP 4300 laser printer and a HP L5m laser printer...both of which I just fixed today to print through the wireless LAN connection on my laptop which runs Ubuntu 7.10 ...
I didn't even have to do anything...just clicked Add new Printer and then Next twice...thats it!! HP printers are awesome...

It works fine in Open SuSE, my friend has a Epson C45 UX. Is yours the same? Maybe Praka can guide you then, I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu.

I myself had a EPSON C45 SX.
And it was working fine in ubuntu and zenwalk.
What distro are u using?
Just check if the print service is on.
Some distro's turn it off if they dont find any printer's during installation.

ray
