Microsoft is celebrating a veritable Windows Vista feast, while Mac OS X and Linux are left scrambling for Wow crumbs. While Mac OS X and Linux are traditionally associated with rival products to Windows, on the current operating system market the most relevant face-off is positioning head-to-head Windows Vista and Windows XP. And Vista is slowly winning the battle, dislodging small chunks of audience from under XP's dominance with each passing month. Made available to businesses in November 2006 and to the general public in January 2007, Vista has grown its share of the operating system market from close to nothing in the beta testing milestones to almost 8% at the
end of November, having moved past the installed base of Linux and Mac OS X since summer.

Windows Vista is in fact the only product that has experienced growth between September and October, increasing its foothold on the market from 7.38% to 7.91%, according to data made available by Net Applications. At the same time, Windows XP dropped from 79.32% to 79.07%, and the Windows client released at the end of 2001 is increasingly struggling with an eroding market share. The various distributions of Linux only managed to account for a period of stagnation, remaining stuck at 0.81% for the past couple of months. But this is still more than what can be said for Mac OS X, as the combined results for Intel Mac and Mac OS decreased from 6.61% in September to 6.55% in October.

Still, the OS X drop comes naturally, accompanying the anticipation of the launch of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard at the end of October. The next month’s statistics are bound to be more favorable for Apple, as the Cupertino-based hardware company applauded selling two million Leopard licenses in the first weekend of availability. Still, Vista also has nowhere but up to go, with the upcoming holiday season and with the first service pack planned for the first quarter of 2008. Microsoft has boasted over 88 million sold licenses of the platform since launch, and a strong revenue growth for the Windows Client division which reeked in some $4,1 billion in revenue in the first quarter of fiscal year 2008.

However, Linux has its own place & I guess will gain more popularity. I hope(I know it aint gonna happen) MS reduces Vista prices. If they release Vista Ultimate for 2K(I am serious :D ) I will buy another copy of it & will dump XP.

I dont mean not selling in the sense that its a bad product...

I mean not selling that much because XP is gr8 with sp2 and now sp3 is also going to come.. so the big chunk of MS business customers are holding off the upgrade to vista :D

^^Yeah you might be right. SP2 was infact called a 'new' OS. But people will move to Vista. Many big business houses are either upgrading or have already upgraded. The reason is Vista's new & better technology and ofcourse its safer. Another major reason is MS will stop XP support sooner or later(2008? I have forgotten actually) which business houses cannot afford.

Did not expect this from you Aayush.

Say, if apple sold 100 macs instead of 50, but the rest sold 500 instead of 100, then 500 is 400% increase, apple will remain with 100% increase.

Overall 50 apple out of 150 total is 33%
100 apple out of 600 is 16.667%

So, even if the sells increase, it cannot mean that market share will increase.

Linux beats any windows OS any time/day/week/month/year/decade......

It is possible. I just said even my point of view is possible.

I hate Vista. I have used it on my friend's lappy. It has 1GB RAM, C2D but it is slower than XP on a PC with 512MB RAM, P-M. And Slower than my old PC with 96 MB RAM, P-2.

still unlike windows or apple which use registeration,Linux->,how can u count the thousands of installs which are not connected to internet and used for networking.there is no way to count the real share of Linux and BSDs(others).Will be much more.

I dont think general crowd registers windows, but I think it is *verified* by the total no. of anti-virus softwares downloaded or updated! But yea on the other hand yea windows updates illegally without permission, so u can say that!

Let me explain a example of Windows dominence..

My organisation training Centre has purchased 50 PC preinstalled with Windows XP. For training purpose, they installed Fedora-5 , but in the registers of the office it is mentioned only as Windows system...So it is normal thousands of organisations have purchased with Windows installed but afterwards, as per their requirement they may modified with either with stripping windows or dual booting with other system...
only a month ago. I scout the market for a linux configured laptop but ended with purchasing Windows VIsta preinstalled system ( because the adamant of the Vendor who refused to deal any thing about linux). But now with the Vista I have configured the following system UBUNTU-7.10,Mandriba-2008, PClinux-2007,SAM-linux,Granular Linux and latest MINT-4(daryana) all with eye candy berryl..
But such facts hardly noticed by the so called *****
StveBallmer should be a happiest man when his system run by more than 80% of world Pcs.. But he is not..the very mention of Linux is boiling his blood(so his goons here) See how he successfully bribe the nigerians to reverse the concluded deal??even the deal is microscopic dot compare to Vista's sale.
I think, this type of propaganda may be good for linux..

Linux has been becoming user friendly steadily with each new release, see Ubuntu and Open SuSE. No one can end the current Microsoft monopoly overnight. My take is another 5 to 6 years to make any headway. The effects of Open source on Microsoft can be seen. Recently they made IE6 as a download not requiring windows validation. If they were SO strict about piracy they would not have done that. My guess is that they did it to thwart the rising use of Firefox. The increase in the use of cross-platform products will help users make the switch from Windows to Linux as that's what most users need, a web browser and an office suite. After acquainting windows users with these two applications I have been quite successful in getting them to adopt Linux. Please note that I am a genuine Windows XP home user, but I still prefer Open SuSE and am learning to use Ubuntu.
