Apple Inc. has issued a software update that creates problems for iPhones modified to work with a cellular carrier other than AT&T Inc.

Apple warned earlier this week that the iPhone update - which adds access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and fixes some security flaws - could permanently disable phones running programs that untether phones from its exclusive partner's network.

Several gadget enthusiast Web sites, including Gizmodo and Engadget, as well as online postings from hacker communities reported that, depending on which unlocking program was used, certain modified phones no longer worked after they installed Thursday's software update. In some cases, the phones worked, but only with the original SIM card that ties the phone to AT&T.

Some sites also reported that iPhones equipped with unofficial, third-party applications were disabled after the update.

Some hackers had characterized Apple's warning as "a scare tactic". Despite Apple's history of playing cat-and-mouse games with hackers in the past, company officials insisted they were ''not proactively'' trying to make hacked iPhones useless.

It was unclear how many iPhone owners had unlocked their phones, but the programs - including several that can be downloaded for free - appeared to be particularly popular with European consumers. Apple isn't selling the iPhone or initiating the service in Europe until November, so the unlocking software allowed Europeans who bought iPhones in the United States to use the $399 devices.

Installing Apple's latest iPhone update is optional.

No, you aren't. This is a sad day for iPhone owners and would-be owners.

Surprising to hear that from a Apple user. Hope jobs is LISTENING!Not just a user - a Mac fanatic and iPhone lover.

Hope Jobs listens. :(

I just have four requests for the iPhone:
1. Allow third party applications;
2. Unleash Bluetooth. Set it free;
3. Allow us to send text messages to multiple contacts simultaneously; and
4. Allow copy-pasting.

I am adding a couple of more requests, aryayush:

5. Allow Video Recording
6. This is a MUST. Why can't we have our own ringtones?

Now if all these are implemented, I'll say I love iPhone & will stop saying iPhone sucks.

I think this is what happens when one enters field where one is not quite well aware of.

Music was also a field Apple was "not quite well aware of" and they are the undisputed reigning champions now.

5. Allow Video RecordingPlease, Apple! Don't. Whatever you do, don't ever allow video recording!

6. This is a MUST. Why can't we have our own ringtones?This is a must? This is a must! How so? It is not a bad feature to have but you're stretching it a bit if you say that this is a must.

or HIS BRAIN IS HACKED ?
no, no... his brain's been unlocked wid some third party software!! :D :D ;)

btw, if the update knocks the iphone out then its bad. apple should've seen that the update jus restores the iphone to factory default conditions not trash it!

^^ well if you have got the iphone unlocked illegaly they have all the rights to restore it the original condition i.e. locked. They can't just knock the life out of the phone & i guess they won't do it.

This is a must? This is a must! How so? It is not a bad feature to have but you're stretching it a bit if you say that this is a must.

ofcourse it is a must for all sensible users who want value for their money else iphone sucks

I think messaging would be very difficult, how do you do that quickly with a stylus or a touchscreen

aryayush
30-09-2007, 03:01 PM
There is no stylus. The onscreen keyboard is quite intelligent and can predict and correct words.

Still, it might be a tad difficult to use for those people who type messages in "hinglish". I, fortunately, don't (as, I suppose, is quite evident from my posts on this forum). :)

well i don't think anything's difficult as such. it just that people are adjusted to something which they've been using since a long time. people wid a nokia handset will find typing easier on its keypad. SE users are comfortable wid their phone's. moto phones wid their keypads. the SE P series, moto linux phones touchscreen, htc. its just a matter of few dayz. you'll get adjusted to what you are using.
