well it appears that d member has infact mentioned d mobo chipset
so assumin dat hes got original intel mobo, it means dat he does not have HD audio

u mite wan2 install Realtek's AC'97 Audio Codecs (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC)

but ur comp re-startin in d middle of install seems strange

I faced this type of problem with D101 boards while it didnt have KB888111 installed :p, but if its really 845 then thats out of question...

Few motherboards support audio only on XP with SP. But intel 845 dont have any such issue.I have intel 845 motherboard at my home....and working fine for last 4 years.

Was there any problem with ur sound card ..before U reinstalled your XP.
