The new ultra-fast USB 3.0 standard which should have a data transfer rate of 600mbps, developed by Intel, HP, Microsoft, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments, is planned to launch early in 2008.

USB 3.0 will be backwards-compatible with older versions but will also be future-proofed for optical ability. It will furthermore be designed for lower power consumption and improved protocol efficiency.

Intel revealed yesterday that along with other industry leaders, it has formed the UBS 3.0 Promoter group to work together and get this technology out as quickly as possible.

The group was formed to develop this technology in the face of increasingly large file sizes moved around on a daily basis as digital media become ubiquitous.

Its predecessor, USB 2.0, has a data rate of 60mbps and was released in 2000 and announced as the new standard in 2001, with revisions made since this time, including the development of Micro-USB.

Jeff Ravencraft, technology strategist with Intel, said that the super-fast USB 3.0 standard is the “next logical step” for this form of wired connectivity.

“The digital era requires high-speed performance and reliable connectivity to move the enormous amounts of digital content now present in everyday life,” he said.

“USB 3.0 will meet this challenge while maintaining the ease-of-use experience that users have come to love and expect from any USB technology.”

yeah, read about usb 3.0

btw, i think its very irresponsible on the website's part to mess up bits and bytes. the current usb2.0 speeds is 60mBps not 60mbps.

Great news. BTW, I doubt what speed will we get with USB 3 on our USB 2 ports :?

if its backwards compatible then usb2 devices will work on usb3 controllers at usb2 speeds and usb3 devices will work on usb2 controllers at usb2 speeds only.

So, will we require a new mobo or just a new USB 3.0 controller will do.

Oh thats really cool, thanks for the info.. :)

so the time is comming to say good bye to FIREWIRE :)

Well eSATA has already been introduced, so 3Gbps of reliable data transfer has already been made available. I just don't trust USB's claims of 4.8Gbps...

I guess it would be of help in cases other than HDDs...

gr8 news this means faster sneaking of data from anyone's pc(specially the college one) :D

its never easy to catch us with latest technology. me thought my new is almost latest but now USB 3.0  it has always happened to me. wenever i purchased a new system a new tech has always popped us which make me feel that my system is OUTDATED

Oh plz, do u even use USB 2.0's speed completely. Feeling that the system is outdated is useless. People are still using 8 years old P3 computer in Cyber cafes cos they still work fine for the job.

But what type of hardware will use speed upto 600mbps...

External HDDs ,if at all they use all of tht, cud b great fr backup

Yep. Some juicy RAID setups would definitely use up some bandwidth... though maybe not 600mBps (as of yet)

If you have a PCI-E x1 Slot, you can definitely install a Add On USB 3.0 Card when its released.

But I have doubt about a plain PCI Card :|

how can you "use speed completely"? the phrase doesn't make any sense to me.

again, the faster the better. gone are the dayz of 40gb hdds. we haf high capacity hdds and lotsa data (music, movies, software, OS etc.) so to keep up wid that we do need advancements in technology like improved speed and reliability. its complementary. i guess even the digital video equipment may adopt this standard unless we haf advancements in i.Link soon.

Most of the devices available out there don't even use 60MBps of USB 2.0, Thats what i meant. There is no use waiting for USB 3.0 to upgrade.

i guess even the digital video equipment may adopt this standard unless we haf advancements in i.Link soon.

That would be Firewire which costs about $5 per port

^^ That's cause 60mBps is only theoretical in case of USB.... real world speeds are much slower...

infra_red_dude
24-09-2007, 04:33 PM
exactly, so wid usb3.0 we can expect the "practical" speeds to be much higher! thats what is development and advancement all about, isn't it :)

the same case is wid hdds. how many sata harddisks actually see 300mbps transfter speed? but then we had sata2 wid 3gbps bandwidth. forget sata, think about uata/100! this is how its all about!

That means USB 3.0 is faster than FireWire (IEEE 1394) 400.

25-09-2007, 01:15 PM
yeah, but still not faster than firewire2 :(

^^ It's going to be 4.8Gbps....definitely faster than FW800...

Yea i know its still less posts but 30 is still 2 much for me

Thx for all ur suggestions, fighting, etc etc:D Keep it going on

Now i think after saying all this the Topic will be less attractive, So don't let it this happen , Guyz
