if you have good UPS between them (Inverter and Computer) then no, its not harm full... :)

Yep. I used inverter backup for many years in my desktop and now using it in my laptop. :D
No harm.

that's a myth..
I use UPS + Inverter combo.
UPS takes care of the long switch over times of Inverter.
No problems with SMPS.

I wonder, the PC guy said this. 'Coz mostly the inverter suppliers say this. Many of them will give u 600VA or 800VA Local made Inverters which are just don't take stated LOAD.
So to keep their business clean the spread such myths...

You can say it this way in terms of safety from electricity fluctuations:

UPS>Inverter>Booster>Stabiliser>Direct power supply.

PS: Booster will boost your voltage to 230 if it falls below even for longer duration.

AFAIK u should not connect your PC directly to your invertor .

Ok, use a spike guard in between.

Dear all,

I think it is partially correct, because most inverters produce square waves of electricity. (first of all I don't know your inverter brand and its specifications) the local power is completely sine wave. All electronic devices designed for using sine wave. So there is a chance to damage the inverter to some highly sensitive devices. for example with some inverters we can hear a humming sound with fans.

^^
Sorry to say, But most of the Inverters I have seen are Sine Wave..
