All of us have played ID software games like doom, quake, etc. They are great games and very innovative too.But the strange part is they don't use directx, they completely depends on openGL.ID software has vowed to use only openGL.

I was wondering what the hell if openGL can do the job all right the why is directx so hyped??A newer directx version every 6 months is a nightmare rendering our latest video cards nearly useless.

Maybe because directx is made by M$ and openGL is open source.

d00d get ur facts right

OpenGL has got nothin 2 do wit d Open Source movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source)

d OPEN stands 4 OPEN STANDARDS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_standard)

OpenGL Licensing Programs (http://www.sgi.com/products/software/opengl/.html)

as 4 choosing betn DX and OpenGL, DX has been optimised 4 performance by MS, so any game developed with DX API will perform well on Win platform whereas in OpenGL u willl have to port ur codes 2 make it win-compatible, thereby increasin devp time [read more time to market] , devp cost[read higher cost of titles, reduced margins of operations et all]

so if a devp know dat it will make only win-based appz DX is logical choice

EDIT
dont c d point of d thread being in dis section
shud b in chit-chat or some equally inane section

open gl was developed by a group of companies with Microsoft supported it.. and open gl is not a Open source thing.. Direct X is also from M$ labs.. so its no VS.. thread closed.. dont open this kind of thread.. until you want to get banned
