well with this much thing , The only thing your PC wil be able to run is DOS(or FreeDOS as i prefer) or DSL(Dman Small Linux) :)

nope it isn't , but u can still buy a Second hand copy win 98 or 95 .

but DSL would be a better option or a CMD Linux Distro .

Windows 95 or 98 (i suggest 95 better) if you can get another 64 mb sd then 98 will be better.. or try installing Win3.11 :p

Dude you can easily go with Windows 3.x or 9x or ME

I've run Win98 with 386 n 486 pcs as well in 1999-2000 period and with very smoothly...

Depends on ur need ...........be it windows 98 (if u can spare a bit more RAM then well n good) otherwise DSL is also a good option.

If I chose 98, the chipset is an Intel 440 Chipset with an AGP Card. Where would I find the drivers?

If I go with Linux, which should I go for? What would be my limitations?

you won't need separate drivers for the mobo resources for a 440 class chipset (ex/lx/bx/zx chipset.) also which agp card do you haf? u can usually find drivers for almost every obsolete hardware on the net. long live win98. that will comfortably run on ur hardware :)

regarding which linux distro... hmm.. first tell us what kinda programming do u wish to do? jus plain c/cpp or java.. swing.. something using eclipse?

Why don't u try gentoo Linux? Its a bit tough but after compiing u can work properly on it.

ram is the contstraint! i suggest you stick wid win98, if u aren't very much comfortable wid installing gentoo. (tho is possible to run gentoo optimised for ur system wid a window manager like windowmaker)

Gentoo isn't a nice idea on a slow processor. Unless he has a faster processor on another PC and cross compiles gentoo on it for the slower one.
If you want to look for something in the league of gentoo, then there is arch linux. It has a very good package manager called pacman. And again, arch coming from slackware family is much more suitable for lower end hardware.

Win95 would run smoothly and faster, or win98se.

chuck win95. believe me, win98se runs as fast as win95 on a P-200 wid 32mb edo ram. i've personally installed and evaluated. win98se is hell lot better than win95.

hmm,yup it can run, i too am running win95 and win98se with ram 8 mb and 64 mb, on 486 and P1. due to 32 mb ram thought may be win95 would b a better option for him.
then its better if he chooses win98se If he's lookin for windows OS

your RandomAccessMemory is what keeps the speed up in the computer so I would try to up it to 256mb and go for 2000 or XP. I would'nt have the money so go win 98. :)

Wow..... Ok well, for the time being my programing is not platform specific. It is plain C/C++, data structure implementation type programming. Am just studying the langs. Have installed Win98SE and it seems to be running fine. THough I got the BSOD more than once. Used the Super VGA driver for the CARd. Dont know which company has made it though. . Will check when I get the time. It now gives me 256 Colors and the Dangerous Creatures theme is reminding me of the good old days of 2000, when I first used Win98SE! :-)

there's no hitch. you can install win 9x/ME on your system and use it just fine! or you could even install linux on that config and use it as a router. old PC doesn't mean that you don't have any option.

as you say you intend to use it for programming, windows 98 shall be good enough.

Hey man your catch phrase is nice "You are a living magnet. What you attract into your life is in harmony with your dominant thoughts."

Neways, will try the drivers opt that infro_red_dude spoke about. Not now but in time I will try it out. Right now am doing a cabinet mod on that old system. Any advice?
