I have data one on linux it is very very simple. First assign a private IP to your network interface using gui based interface in kde (system setting -> network) say 192.168.1.100 then set the default route to be 192.168.1.1 by the command
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
thats all now ping 192.168.1.1 and then ping the dns IP to confirm and you are on the net.

On madrake u even don't need any insturction,
just go on Connection settings(mens where u choose ur Network connections and connection types),
choose through ADSl, and just keep it going all u need to enter is username and password ur work will be done.......,
and i never used Ubuntu tho, but even on Debian it was like this,
I never used method wht ever pradeep hv written here

Guys is this config required? My connection is working without all this just a route entry indicating default route to the BSNL modem. Thats all. I realy wonder why use pppoe and stuff.

as the tutorial in the link that i have provided says u need some kind of pppoe configuration to be done cause the isp uses em , maybe ur distro did that automatically.
somebody like GNUrag please enlighten us about all these issues
and make this a STICKY

The data one modem is a router and a firewall all in one no config of ppoe is required at the machine all config is done in the modem itself by accessing the web interface.

this method may be used on those distro's that either dont have auto config wizard or if the autoconfig wizard is givin u trouble

Hey guys, just install the package i have given
http://www.geocities.com/prodigies_eee1/files/tkpppoe/rp-pppoe-3.5.tar.gz
Insatall the package by downloading from the above URL.
After installing go to the terminal and type "tkpppoe" , you will get what you want. You also have a READ ME file inside the package.
