what is the purpose if its just casual shooting then a 7mp cam will do.
there are many in the market now different companies all are good.
I am using a canon A62O which is very very very nice, photography is my hobbie.
i have not taken any class or some thing like that.
Be carefull there are many cam's with diff capabilities.
Before you go buy one you should know what you want out of it.
My personal suggestion would be any digital cam where you can chage the lens to your taste later on.

Check out the Sony CyberShot W55. It's a 7MP camera which is very compact. Sony India bundles 512MB Memory Stick with all their digicams. Plus Sony offers 3-year national warranty. So, it's a nice option to have. Do your research and get one. There is no such thing as a perfect digicam. You will always miss out on some features..
Edit: W55 costs 12.5k, there is a cheaper W35 too which is around a grand less.

Wrong section dude.
Go for Canon digi-cams only.
Sony lacks clearity.
I can't suggest you a particular model now,sorry.

^^what it means is that suppose you've got 100s of photos in ur camera memory, and lets say u're seeing my photo, then it has the capability of showing you all the photos in which i'm in frame. that is, it will recognise my face from all the photos.

actually i feel 10mega pixel is a bit too much. it isn't necessary since chances are you'll never be blowing up the pics so large. its better to go for approx 7 MP and invest in a cam with good zoom (DO NOT go for digital zoom, it is crap.) a cam with 8x-10x optical zoom would be gud and should be available within your budget

You can adjust the Image resolution on that cam and i agree Optical zoom is little less but camera is good IMHO :)

of course i know you can adjust image res. my point is that if mostly 10MP is overkill

even i agree.. 5-6 MP & 10 MP u wouldnt even be able to spot the diff
my advice would be to go for 6MP & 6X or greater optical zoom & read reviews & make sure that it is good at shooting in the dark

buying stuff like this becomes very simple if u know what u want from it.
my bet would be a canon. choose the one with higher ISO capability(1000) is very nice.
the good thing about these cams are u can change the lens or the proper way to put it is upgread.
canon is the choice for me. and i will suggest that.
PS: please check properly what ur buying and from where ur buying.
look at atleast5-6 models go a little over ur budget too. some times they offer very good value for money.
