very high temperature of cpu

I hav overclocked my p4 3.06GHz HT processor to 3.45GHz & the problem is that its heating up too much.Even during Idling its temperature is around 45 degrees and at high usage 68 degrees.I changed the heat sink compound and found the temperatures drop by 4 degrees at peak usage but I think even 64 degrees is too high. Is it normal

thr has been lotsa discussion already here...newez 1stly if ur overclocking ur cpu u shud alwez make sure u put extra cooling solns...get a extra fan attached to ur cab....n make sure ur system is not kept at a high temp area...if issue still stands try reducing ur overclocked speed....u may also want 2 leave ur cab open for proper ventilation....if still it wont work or u dun wan so much mess then stay happy wit 3.06GHz...coz overheating issues r damn risky....cost me 14k 3 yrs back...

also turn off the com when u don't use it

HT proccy's are hot . dont OC them . my procccy idles at 48C and maxes at 56C . 60C shud quite be the maximmum..

I have installed 2 additional fans in my case at the rear as exhaust but they r not of much help.I hav heard some days back that pentium D processors also have heating issues and they often cross the 70 degree barrier.I am confused with this only as i am thinking this could be normal

If it's a prescott (I think it is) then 68c at load if fine. Those damn thing runs really hot, I had mine which use to go around 75c at loads. But as always try to keep it as low as possible.

For OC if u dont have one AMD X2 or C2D, for Ocing a P4... one will need heavy dedicated cooling for sure... !!!

But for P4, we have few 524 and 630, 524 idles around in 53c where as 630 is at 61c, so I guess john is right, 64c can be called fine... !!!

Though run Some good software to test the temp as once miss calculated u will burn the procy for sure... !!

With HT Prescott processors the next best thing is installing third party good quality Heatsink and Fan.
This not only helps keeping the temperature low ,but will also help you in pushing the OC levels further.

I am using speed fan 4.31.It has a fan speed control.Is there any software which can be used to run the cpu fan at full speed. The BIOS settings r almost useless for controlling the fan speed

act fans r directly installed over systems main power supply....ie 5 volts....so i dun think its power can b increaed via any s/w....u may try increasing ni. of fans....IMHO, donot overclock if u got doubts abt ur cpu temp....n yes ht n pentium d do have heating issues at oc....so keep a track

@janitha: i installed my fans witout even oc my system that too just 1.8ghz just coz twas gettin heated up due to room temp here....n i already suffered a burnt cpu dun wanna get into it again....so for installing an extra case fan it comes wit a 5 volt power supply connecter which connects to the plugs coming out directly from the cabs power supply which also provides supply to other drives.....i dun think it can be controlled by s/w...correct me if...

Now that's true, overclocking those prescott with stock air cooling is a challenge in itself.
And yes those fans with molex connector can't be controlled but the fans which have 3-pin connector (red, black and yellow wire) can be controlled.
But installing lots of fans doesn't really lower the temps., it's a good airflow which helps in cooling. Also if the wires are a mess inside the cabby, firstly do some cable management.

Quite True in My case :lol: got wired up just to fit few extra fan in :lol: thats traping more heat that its cooling :lol:

Quite frankly, E4400 would be cheaper than Cooler like ur one :lol: (yeah, yeah... I know one would need a Mobo also :()

you will surely laugh:D :D :D if i tell u on which mobo i OC it.It is a biostar mobo based on via chipset vt8237r.Its model no. is p4m800-m7a ver-7.0. I bought it last year on 22 march for Rs 2200.I think it provides sufficient value for money with onboard graphics,usb 2.0,lan ,6 channel audio, agp slot,cnr clot,sata raid 0 & 1.:cool:

As far as I know all case fans and also the CPU fan operates on 12V and speed can be controlled only if there is a third wire connected to the sensor or using a fan controller like Coolermaster Aerogate.

As Choto Cheeta said, instead of all the fans, coolers etc, it will be better to buy a E2140 and a cheap Mobo.

well my proccy in running fine & i am not having any stability issues even after running 4 to 5 hours.My mobo which is of biostar has a special feature called as WATCHDOG which checks stability issues & vulnerable state for processor and automatically resets the default FSB.
