thanks for fedora and not for providing Linux softwares in source format (http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showpost.php?p=529172&postcount=4).

Digit has no other option but to give Linux softwares in source formats because there are hundreds of distros out there and each have their own package manager. An rpm package for Fedora will not work for Suse or Red Hat. A dpkg package for Debian will not work for Ubuntu. Even differnt versions of the same distro have different packages for installation. Now which one will Digit give? So the safest option is to give the source code. If you have the correct libraries, you can compile and use it in any distro.

Needless to say, it seldom works, nor does RPMs do (the dependency hell). So giving linux softwares is useless, except linux distros.

By the way, is there really any need to include the CD? I think a DL DVD every month is enough. So why just making the disc cluster bigger?

May be they're thinking abt the ppl who still own the old warhorses CD-Roms

anyway gr8 edition and the DL is the main reason that they can pack in so much stuff for everyone.Hope they don't intend to hike the price

exactly this is my point.with source packages given,n00bs tries thinking it can be easy install like in installshield/.exe's.that's what i quoted.let digit provides distro DVDs/CDs.but its a waste providing source.and i pointed that earlier itself in the thread.

use synaptic package manager(in menu>System>admin>).it contains all those softwares!digit simply provides source packages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_code) for Linux,that is not worth with Ubuntu and other distros which got apt and dpkg and better package management.
Anjuta is a good ide for c/cpp.eclipse is for java etc.again those source packages distributed by digit is a waste without a good package manager which resolves dependecies.that i'd say is a waste that digit carries these source packages.rather they shud provide linux distros in more and BIG softwares for eg;for Ubuntu-Aptoncd etc.
Dont try those source given from digit.its just illogical for eg;how it'll be if u get those .dll files,diffrnt config things etc wholesale to ur hand instead of installshield setup or simply "setup.exe"-the same thing in linux/unix are those gzipped(.gz) or bzipped(.bz2) source files;for eg:ur xmms source!.
So the thing is there are very good package managers which can fetch you and install software without searching internet like in windows.for eg: Debian or Ubuntu have apt and dpkg doing a wonderful job.for redhat/fedora .rpm is there,yum is there etc.
So never try those outdated source and if possible any source packages,get ur package manager works for you! :smile:
for eg:in GNOME menu after Applications and Places,there is another menu called System which contains administration menu>in which there is synaptic manager.give ur local user password when prompted.
Do read below article very informative for Windows Users too:

Can some one from the Digit team please clarify, whether the Fedora included is 7.0.1, i.e. the ver that released on 31st May 2007.

Secondly is the DVD a Live DVD, i.e. without installing can we use Fedora with KDE and XFCE GUI Interface ??

please confirm the above mentioned points

let digit and chip fight each other out, let there be a bloody war between them ,

that they might strike each others with guns (games), missiles (s/w), and nukes (O.S ).

let them bleed with their own blood (long interesting articles)

that,
we get to enjoy the best of magazines from both the end...:)

oh, yeah i forgot, PC world tooo...
sooner or later i wish, just on a blue moon day , either chip, digit, pc world gives you this add.....

This issue in particular was good. The articles covered a wide range of interesting topics. Really nice! Raaabo's hard work (which went in contacting people for 'Chic Tech') shows. The laptop shoot out was the icing on the cake :) The PC World and Digit's laptop shoot out were coincidentally named the same - 'Lap It Up'. The only gripe in the otherwise excellent laptop write-up has to be the specs and poor benchmark details. Digit should put in some extra effort and better proofread the specs and shoot-outs in general. Goof-ups and small technical mistakes have been a trend in the recent times(which honestly happens only with Digit). This issue was no exception. For a laptop, warranty is everything. How the MFDs deserve a mention about warranty and the laptops don't in the specs table is something which is beyond me. The load-conditions for the battery life benchmarks and procedure had no mention. Seriously! What's up with that? The specs table for laptop totally blows. The processor models (esp. Core Duos) have been mentioned incorrectly as Core 2 Duo everywhere. Totally misleading as most just refer the specs table.

And, Well .. There is no sign of the replacement DON DVD. What else is left to be done? Mail, Send over the DVD to digit's HQ and get no replacement for it. This is very unprofessional. Digit needs to improve and do better. Really.

Didn't get time to read the Fast Track. I usually read them in college (as they fit inside full scape notebooks easily). Would check it out some time later. I'm sure it would be nice. Well, this is a ridiculous error on our part, so apologies for that - I should have checked this better. Turns out that the CS3 installation is hard-coded to install from your optical drive's root directory.

But all is not lost. Copy the contents of the Tools\Multimedia\Adobe_CS3_Design_Premium folder to your hard disk and burn it on to a new DVD. If you don't have a DVD writer, use Nero to create an ISO image and mount it using Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% and run the installation from there. That should do the trick.

Again, apologies.

Hello everyone,

Regarding the Fedora distro in July 2007 issue, is there any way that i can use it as a live DVD, i mean something like getting on the command prompt and starting the KDE or Gnome from the the command line, that too without installing it on a HDD. cuz i am very short of real estate on my hard drive.

Secondly I have a 1 GB pen drive, is there any way by which i can install linux on the per drive and create a live USB,

I tried installing it on the USB by following the screens on the DVD, even removed most of the apps to fit it on the USB, but still it did not work, half way through the installation i get some wired error message and bump.

i guess i had seen a tutorial with all the screenshots on some website (maybe redhat or frdora or something ....) where they had demonstrated installing the linux on the USB Stick.

as of now is there any way or any tutorial through with i can install the fedora on my USB stick, directly from the digit july 2007 DVD.

help would be appreciated.

BTW thanks for Urban terror, a few tips or article links on how to play the game would be appreciated, i am able to play it offline in "free for all" mode using bots but am not good at shooting, aiming and tackling them.

I get an err msg "swap error" when i try to play codered.

thanks

Create your own Linux distro - very clever title. You really got me fooled. You didn't make any distro, you just customized it. I was expecting something else. duh!!

The Fastrack was good. But the history chapter came to a rather abrupt end. 1998 was the last year mentioned. What happened in the next 9 years? Either arya got tired of writing or you cut off the rest in order to keep it under size. Seems more like the latter, since arya getting tired of writing about Apple is impossible. :))

The free games were worthless. The visuals are so dated, looks like playing a pre-Windows 98 game. And the screenshot of the game "Excalibre: morgan's revenge" you provided on the DVD interface again got me fooled. The screen showed very pretty graphics. The game never looks like that. I don't know from where you got that. And please don't give multiplayer games.

Movie of the month should have been named "Nobody needs to see". Poor story, poor direction, poor acting. What a waste!!

Finally, instead of mentioning their names on each and every issues of Digit in small quarter page news, it would be much better if you bring out a FastTrack on them and write about them to your heart's content.
Fast Track to Paris Hilton and Britany Spears!! :))

For the rest of the chapters, I did not have to look anything up anywhere because I knew it all. For the history chapter, I had to refer to books and the Internet. It was a slow task. I got bored. :(
I did tell Mr. Deepak Ajwani that the chapter was incomplete three months in advance but they did not seem to have a problem with that.

Qams - do that once again and you'll be facing a ban. I can imagine your frustration, but like Aayush says, being irritating won't help.

Turns out T-Series churned out a lot of dud Don DVDs, so we're quickly running out of replacements.

In re the need to send the defective DVD, the purpose is twofold - we first need to verify that the it is indeed the DVD and not your drive that's faulty, and to prevent people from getting free Don DVDs which they can then sell. It's inconvenient, but we can't really help it either.

Most tutorials, articles, cd/dvd content are windows based. I agree that there a more no. of windows users than linux. But if you have some linux content, then it would be better. I have seen only one fastrack on linux and one on Open-Source. At least 5-10% of mag shud contain linux related content. :)

Come on and see this article written by Michael browne(Digit Team)
Title: Memoirs of memory (Digit august 2006)
He writes that CPU bandwidth of a 32-bit 3.2GHz is
3200x32=102400Mbps or 12800MBps
and 400MHz DDR Lags in term of bandwidth by a factor of 4 here it is,
400x64=25600Mbps or 3200MBps
so 3200x4+latency<RAM>=12800<CPU>

According to my opinion and knowledge,
CPU bandwidth depends on its FSB speed not on Internal clock speed, i.e.
800x32(Pentium D)=3200MBps.

so 3200+latency<RAM>=3200<CPU>
for Dual Channel:
6400+latency<RAM>=3200<CPU>
enough for CPU to reach 100% efficiency in terms of bandwidth.
Digit readers ! What do you think ?
All opinions are invited ! :-)

[B][SIZE=4][COLOR=blue]No replacement of DON DVD !!!

Reply is yes,
But -vely !

digit team wants fake DON DVD back without bearing courier charges,
they charged us 75Rs more for this non-detectable Don DVD, + now they wants 40Rs more !!!

Hey Qams cool it dude, Its not digit's fault. Right! Even I was sent a Terminator 2 DVD by mistake when I ordered LOTR, when I intimated them of the confusion, they told me to keep the T2 and sent me LOTR as well. How can they help it if TSeries is playing spoilsport.
