Help: Vista - XP Networking

I apologise if this has been already discussed as i cudnt find my soln in search...

m trying to connect my desktop p4 1.8 512mb ddr xp sp2 with notebook hp tx1003 amd dual-core 1gb ddr2 nforce chipset vista premium via lan cable as my desk does not support wireless....

my notebook in vista does not get any ip address n desktop gets 192.168...... wich cannot b pinged from notebook....plus i activated internet sharing wich is not working either...my net is in desktop via modem dial up...

any idea plz

sad i didnt get ne response here...newez iv managed internet connection sharing witin m lap n desk but m not able 2 share files n folders n ping is also not working at one or both sides....
