TECH firms constantly moan about software piracy and no wonder. Last year it accounted for 35% of the worldwide market and cost the industry $39.6 billion according to the Business Software Alliance, a trade body. America and China lead the world in terms of total losses from piracy at $7.2 billion and $5.4 billion respectively. But when calculated according to the number of computers in each country a different picture emerges. Cash-strapped countries dominate the leader board. In Azerbaijan, which comes out on top, computers are loaded with $262-worth of pirated software on average. But Iceland is the surprise second-placed nation: although software to the tune of $32m is pirated it is spread over only a few computers.

I dont think they included games in the list of pirated software. I have seen Max Payne and NFS being pirated the most. Almost every guy I met had them.

Cori Hartje, director of Microsoft's Genuine Software Initiative, holds up pirated copies of Windows Vista and Office 2007 that she obtained for less than $10 apiece on the black market during a December trip to Sao Paolo, Brazil. The street vendor even warned that the copies might not work very long, since Microsoft was likely to invalidate the product keys used.

I guess that in India, only a few percent are techies like us who want the latest and thes best stuffs out in the market.
The rest just surf net and listen songs and nothing else much in their computer.

what it probably means that although "America and China lead the world in terms of total losses from piracy..." when it comes to proportion of 'pirated sw : legal sw', neither us, china or India figure in the list. comforting to know that thus then there IS a sizable percentage in India using legal sw too.

the population of india is more than 1 billion.
but how many percentage of people have access to computers?
Small wonder, over the next five years, Mexico’s computer penetration is slated to touch 46 PCs per 100 people even while India’s crawls to 1.4% by end-March 2005 from the current 1.1% level.
India is expected to add 11.7 million PCs by end-2005, compared to China’s 44.8 million, Brazil’s 13 million and Mexico’s 11.9 million over the same period”.

So even if India's PC count was more than Mexico's (in end 2005) when percentage is compared, india lags behind.
This simply explains why India is missing from that list. :D

sachin is right, hardly 3% pay income tax in India and you are expecting India to be No.1 in software piracy? I would rather hope India be No.1 in technology
