Hi Guys!

I am planning to buy a PS2, but I heard there are different models in it. What are the models and whats the difference in them. Moreover, which is the best one and how much should it approximately cost (grey market). I also heard that one had to get a chip installed to play pirated games. Is it true and if yes, how much does the chip cost.

Thank you.

The slim version is the only version available in the market right now. Most shops sell the ps2 with the mod chip installed (except authorised sony stores).

In the original ps2, you get the warranty but can only play original games which are very expensive. In the modded version, you don't get the warranty but can play both original and pirated games.

BTW, is it possible to play Military based games on PS2. Are titles like COD, IGI, MOH available for PS2. As these games generally need a Keyboard to operate, is it possible to play then using a controller...

Apart from this, why do one need a Hard Disk in PS2 when games run directly from DVD and games can be saved in a Flash based Memory card.

Don't know about the other games but cod is available on ps2. About the hard disk it was available in the earlier version of ps2 and was required for a few games. The slim version has no hard disk, nor would you find any games that would require it. A 8mb memory card (available for 600 bucks) is all thats needed).

Apart from this, why do one need a Hard Disk in PS2 when games run directly from DVD and games can be saved in a Flash based Memory card.Well simply put if you use the HDD in the Slim version of PS2,you can practically save the whole game on the HDD & then boot from there which in time cuts down the load time far more than those DVD boot up could ever do.

Uh, I guess the slim version doesn't support HDD..
I may be wrong, but then it was only the older version which had the HDD support...

You can use the USB port for a HDD...can't you?

Well there is a USB hard drive which can be plugged into the PS2 but it has to be a compatible HDD with the Slim version & costs a bit higher than the usual ones. There's also a software which can boot those games via the HDD,I suppose it was called Magic Swap or something like that.Amamzing facility, provided you are ready to spend additional dough on it.I have personally seen a HDD connected to the PS2 running the ripped games on it in a PS2 game parlour near me.Was really astonishued to see the cut down in the load times of most of the games. If you check it over the internet you might find some tutorials which might help you set this up.I suppose I had read about it on Afterdawn forums.

^^ I'd like to own something like that. The load times in games like double agent etc. make me want to pull my hair out. Too bad i won't be able to afford it though.

i own a slim ps2 which doesnt have a hdd.
the 8mb memcard can store save files of many games (i have stored save files of some 15 games). however u get new memcard for 600 bucks. so memory is not issue. the other problem MIGHT be loading time. however with all the leading titles, have not faced any major loading problems.

DVD's yes you can.As a standard,PS2 fully supports playing DVD videos not directly burned vob files though. As far as Divx movies are concerned then you'll need to have some boot dics's which have a software called Reality Media player,I believe it was called, which would recognise the Divx files & play them on your PS2.

What if one wants to buy a console but doesn't have a budget to go for the latest?

It loads the boot disk like a normal game and the software or whatever is loaded in to the RAM (i think) of the PS2...sorta like a Linux live cd.

Then, you take that out and put in your video DVD and the videos load like normal...I think...

You'll need to burn the DVD along with the software in a given format,a tutorial of which you can find over google.I suppose you better check on afterdawn forums or try techtree which I believe had posted this guide long back.Anyways here's the link to Techtree's guide http://www.techtree.com/India/PS2_DivXXviD_Playing_Guide/551-57797-584-2.html

I suppose you'll need to burn this DVD & boot it in the PS2.After that's done just open the tray without restarting the PS2 & insert your Divx DVD after which the software which is already on the screen would try & decode your Divx files.I haven't personally tried it myself but you'll learn it easily from the tutorial.

Its simple.ive done it already.just get the independence complier for ps2.Then use launchelf,a program which has a file browser that can read from both memory card slots, the dvd drive, usb ports,IDE hard drive and host.it also has a ftp browser built in.it can launch other elf files like sms media player that plays mp3's and divx movies from usb hard drives, host or the IDE hard drive which isnt available for the slim.myps2(another ELF)has a jpeg viewer and shoutcast radio.and ps2IRC is a IRC client for the ps2.

Neat huh?
