u have Windows XP with SP1, as u already have SP1 there is no need to install SP1a.....so it's better to install SP2 now.....
then configure it's Windows Security Centre Alerts so that it does not nag u at every startup, about Antivirus update and Windows update again.....

I also have WinXP without any Service Pack Install
can i directly install SP2 on it without installing SP1.
 Will SP2 take care of all patches i.e. the Blaster Sasser etc..
 Will SP1a be enough to take care of internet threats or SP2 is a must as many people have faced problems with SP2.
I also have Norton AV 2004 to take care of viruses.
And Sygate Personal Firewall Pro to take care or intruders.

1st of all just get the SP2 install.......
but u know MS have relised aroud 35 odd MB of patches after SP2 os i think u have quite a few patches to install.......
also u can chose what u install..... just go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com & then configure what do u need....
Windows Security Centre Alerts so that it does not nag u at every startup, about Antivirus update and Windows update again.....
ya if u have older AVS, what isnt compertable with SP2 then u can do it....... but its recomendet to turn the auto update on......

For your first query, yes service packs are cumulative. You dont need to install sp1 first & then sp2.You can directly install sp2.
SP2 will take care of problems which it was devised to take care of,but yeah blaster & sasser have been taken care of.Check MS for what sp2 has & what it does.
SP1 is past, for a bare minimum you gotta have sp2 & upon that the post sp2 patches & hotfixes must be installed. As someone already said, after having sp2 installed check windowsupdate for security patches.

also, there is no difference between SP1 and SP1A, except in SP1A the MVM (Microsoft Virtual Machine, for running Java Programs) is not included.....
