xp media centre not reading cd drive

My friends laptop is HP dual core 1gb RAM loaded with win xp media centre. It shows two problems occassionaly.

1. CD drive sometime is not read by xp.
2. folder/options is sometime not available.

please suggest the cause and remedy.
