Alky has released a preview of his DirectX 10 (http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/2007/04/finally-making-use-of-this-blog-i.html) compatibility libraries. These libraries (http://fallingleafsystems.com/site_media/preview.zip) allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it. No longer will you have to upgrade your OS and video card(s) to play the latest games! The current preview (http://fallingleafsystems.com/site_media/preview.zip) allows you to run a number of examples from the DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. He hopes to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games. He also plan to post on his blog from time to time (http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/) with screenshots and videos of what's to come.

Hmm...as soon as DX 10 is fully functional on XP there is no reason for me to upgrade to Vista at all!! Thanks for the update...I've been waiting a long time for this!!

I'm a 19 year old software reverse-engineer living in the San Diego area. I primarily work on compiler and inter-OS compatability projects.
so this DX10 on XP may or WILL create driver issues.
instead of taking a risk like this & putting my BMW :D (my PC) in RISK , i'd just go for a Vista :D

Yeah me too. They shut down Halogen when they were near to completion and MS sent them cease and desist letter. :(

Halogen is a mod for command and conquer: general : zero hour. It is popular mod. Has the name tells you it is from Halo series but it is Halo RTS. Meaning you can control all the units from Halo series. When the mod popularity grew so much that microsoft was unable to take the preassure and gave them cease and desist letter to shut down all progress of the mod. If they dont take it seriously they would be battling in court and most of them are students and from US and they had to obey the rules.
For more information you can look here :-

After the mod closed down. Microsoft, Bungie Studios and Ensemble Studios announced Halo Wars RTS. There is one serious problem with Halo Wars it was not for PC but for X360 .
Microsoft and the loyal fanboys sucks.

But this begs the quetion (even though the answer is obvious) why isn't this from M$?
A commecnt from the bog-
Complete BS, the only thing a wrapper can do is convert DX10 API calls into DX9. Software emulated geometry shaders would be insanely slow, because you would be sending the data to the vertex shaders on the GPU, back to the geometry shaders on the CPU, then sending it again to the fragment shaders on the GPU. This is retarded.
does this makes sense to anyone??

Geometry Shader can indeed be emulated in software to some extent, but the resulting overhead will be a lot. Besides DX 10 requires WDDM drivers, how will it bring that to XP?
