I recommend HP or DELL based Intel Core Duo laptops considering your requirements and budget. Take a look at the respective websites to suit your taste.
HP Pavilion Notebooks (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF02a/1090709-1116637-1116665.html)
DELL Notebooks (http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs)
There are some major differences between Intel Core Duo and Intel Core2Duo. The main difference being the architecture. Core Duo is built on a 32-Bit architecture. Core2Duo is 64-Bit based. This makes Core2Duo more futuristic since most of the applications are now slowly moving towards 64-Bit.

One of my friends has a dell lappy. The warranty is rock solid. They will replace the laptop in everycase except in the case of fire and theft
Even if the laptop falls off your lap(or wherever you keep it) and breaks apart, they are going to replace it within the warranty if it cant be "treated" and there are many more similar cases in which these guys will replace the laptop.

but what bout lenovo???
sivarap
20-04-2007, 06:33 PM
yeah...how about lenovo?
But after a lot of research, I found out that Hp laptops are cheaper than DELL for teh same configurations.
But HP home&homeoffice laptops can't support more than 2GB ram.
If u want more u have to go in for small business laptops which i am not much aware of.
Maybe i'll be able to answer tomorrow.

^^ Best of luck dude. I have hp nx6110 and I have had a LOT of trouble with it.
Since the day I bought it about 9 months ago, it has undergone 3 harddisk replacements, 2 DVD drive replacements, one motherboard replacement, one bluetooth dongle replacement, and now it is in line for 3rd DVD drive replacement.
Maybe I had a bad piece from the start. My old Desktop runs on the very hardware it came with and it is 7 years old. All the replacements were due to manufacturing defects (nothing from user side).
I think that is why their service is the best, because it is required more often than not.

^^ Dude the core2duo is future proof, it runs 64bit OS.
XP is all gud, M$ is gonna support it till 09 so dont worry bout the support issues although most of the mid level lappys today are designed for Vista whereas the entry level have XP or even free DOS!!!

^^ Don't just go only with my post. Ask others for their experiences. As I said, maybe I had a bad piece from the start. HP is a good company, but I just don't know what is wrong with my piece.

I have compaq presario. Its 7 year old PC and has given me only 2 problems.
Within the 1st year, the PSU got short circuited coz I screwed with the input power supply switch and once I spilled my milk over my keyboard and it stopped working.:D
But since it was within warranty, so both the things were replaced free of cost.
Never had any problems with my PC except it does feels a bit outdated sometimes.:)
So the bottomline is: HP should be a good company.

^^ AMD 64X2 will give almost equal performance to C2D if your mobo is good. And they come cheap too.
And since youre not a gaming freak then I think AMD will suit your needs.
SAve the money on C2D and its mobo and go for high speed RAM or some other hardware.
And I think Dell is supercool Laptop. You can customise its hardware online
on the Dell India website and can see for yourself if it fits your need and your budget. And their warranty is rock solid too. Waise HP/Compaq is also nice. Dont know much bout ACER and Lenevo.

I told you to go thru the DELL website.. and then check the local vendors for other laptops.
Dell as a system might be costly but they give you rock solid warranty. Imagine that the laptop slips from your hand and breaks, then they are gonna replace it for free and that by coming to your home!!!!
HP is also good and is also a bit cheaper. But their warranty is limited, and thats the main reason for its cost.
Dont go for acer!!!!
Finally go for AMD 64 X2 if its available on lappys(dont know if it is). << you said you werent into gaming!!!
If its not then I think you should go for C2D but dont buy a core duo/athlon 64 processor as it is an older technology. I mean just imagine: single core vs double core. :D:D:D:D

Screens (matte or glossy) are a matter of personal choice. Both have their pros and cons. I prefer matte as there is no reflection. Glossy screens enhance colour and are vibrant. The quality of pictures and videos is much better in Glossy screens.
I suggest you to try out both the options at a shop or at a friend's place before taking a final decision.

They did not repair.... they replaced the H/W that was faulty. And yeah, they never asked what happened. Replaced it without any questions at all. All I had to do was to get the laptop to the service station.

A little over a month ago I bought Compaq Presario V6000 (V6112AU) and it came with AMD Turion 64X2 1.66Mhz, NVidia 6150, 1GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM, 120GB HDD, 8X Dual Layer DVD Writer, in-built Altec Lansing Speakers, Fax/Modem, Network Card, Witeless Lan 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth Wireless PAN 2.0, 5-in-1 Digital Media Reader (reads SD, XD, Mmc, Memory Stick, Memory Stick pro etc), Express Card/54 slot, Windows Vista
I am pretty happy with it also does a pretty good job for gaming, the wi-fi is really amazing. I paid Rs.43000/- 36 days ago.
Although I am a hard core Intel fan I chose AMD64X2 over Intel Core 2 Duo bcoz of the price factor...AMD64x2 costed (I think) around Rs.8000 to Rs.10000
So far I haven't had any problems with the laptop...I just added another 1GB of RAM to it...also played NFS Carbon, FryCry & Never Winter Nights wihtout any problems. The battery lasts 165 minutes in "Maximum Power Savings" settings & 90 minutes in "Maximum Performance" settings.

That is what I have been shouting from rooftops that AMD X2 lappy is better than Intel because of motherboards & onboard graphics use on them and they are cheaper too. By saving arround 10,000 and still you get onboard graphics, which is 3 times superior to Intel GMA 950 etc
I have another version of it i.e V3228AU which is not X2 and is without Vista, it is with free DOS. Cost is arround Rs 31000. It has same NVidia 6150 onboard
graphics.
The point here is not IBM, HP, Compaq, Acer & Dell, Sony etc. Any company's AMD lappy is better and cheaper than Intel from the onboard graphics point of view, and that is what is required in most of the cases. Acer AMD lappy has got ATI onboard graphic, Del;l AMD lappy has Nvidia I think like wise. The advantage od HP & compaq is its Imprint Technology used.

Hi
I am not a regular in Digit Forums, i am more of a CHIP guys.
I was just surfing around, so i came upon a google search about this thread. And guess what, i just got a COmpaq v6305 ,which my DAD got from the US for Rs33,000 (it was like less than $800 without bags etc etc)It has Turion X2 processor,1 GB RAM,100 GB HDD(only 94GB usable i dont know why) and Geforce6150. Dad also got me an iPOD and a Video Player(both he got for a good deal on eBay)

I gotta tell u, this lappy is awesome, it has lots of free game installed from HP,courtesy of Jowood and other publication, free 60day trail of MS Office 2007 and lots of freebees. Apart from the good hardware and decent graphic card, i really love the piano black matte finish. It looks awesome. My friends with SONY VAIO are like- "this laptop looks too expensive than it is". And thats true. This laptop is true flaunt value.
Just dont get touchy with it.Like my IPOD, it is a fingerprint magnet...
Hey Caleb, i dont want the Backup partition on my Compaq v6 .Is it okay if i merge it with C drive?
