Hi guys,
I had been using Firestarter all these time for setting up my firewall policies in Mandriva (actually, I don't do anything, just installs it and Firestarter does everything it is supposed to do by default:D). After moving to Kubuntu, I installed Firestarter again and did a port scan at PCFlank. (http://www.pcflank.com/) It said that there is one port that isn't secure (though not open). I think it was NetBios. So, I installed Guarddog and enabled some protocols that I think I usually use and left others to be blocked. But, after doing that, I can't sent any mail from Thunderbird. When I click 'sent', it would show status as "Looking up smtp.gmail.com, Connecting to smtp.gmail.com". The progress bar is moving, but nothing happens. I guess it would show error after some timeout. Other applications like Firefox, receiving mail in Thunderbird, Gaim, Google Earth, Konversation, download managers and ftp are wroking fine.

The protocols I have enabled in Guarddog are as follows (listed as shown in Guarddog):

Chat

IRC-Internet Relay Chat
Jabber
MSN Messenger
Yahoo! MessengerData Serve - None

File Transfer
FTP - File Transfer Protocol
HTTPS - World Wide Web over SSL
HTTP - World Wide WebGame - None

Interactive Session - None

Mail
POP3 - Post Office Protocol version 3
POP3S - Post Office Protocol version 3 over SSL
SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer ProtocolMedia - None

Miscellaneous - None

Network
DNS - Domain Name ServerUser Defined - None

Please help.

Check if ports 995 and 587 are open? If not open them. Those are the ones used by gmail.

How do I check that?

Check guarddog's manual and open that port.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought I need to add some other protocol, never thought about ports. I added a new rule to allow connection through port 587 and it now works perfectly. Thanks once again. (I think I will exhaust my thanks pool pretty soon. :D)

While I was going through the Guarddog manual, I saw some detailed info about zones. Before going into that, I have one doubt regarding zones. If I add a zone in which only http is allowed and enable that zone, no matter what happens, no other ports except http port will be open?
