The future does not look bright for Microsoft, if one were to consider their customer demographics. Statistically, Mac users are much younger than Windows users. According to a study developed by Hitwise Intelligence, visitors of Microsoft's website are considerably older than Apple's visitors. LeeAnn Prescott, senior research analyst at Hitwise Intelligence notes that both Apple and Microsoft understand very well the nature and structure of their customer demographics and use the appropriate strategies to promote their products.

According to Hitwise demographics, most traffic to the Apple website came from users under 45, while users over the age of 35 gave the majority of traffic to the Microsoft website. 22 percent of Microsoft's website traffic came from visitors over 55. Both Apple's and Microsoft's advertising teams worked with the age factor and came up with appropriate campaigns for their costumer populations. Windows' chosen spokesman on the Windows Vista promotional website is Tom Skerrit, a 73 year-old actor.

Apple's ad campaign is centered on two characters, Mac and PC. The Mac character was embodied by a young actor while PC was played by an older, nerd-looking actor. Though both companies understand who their customers are and use the appropriate approaches, the age gap between their customer populations are definitely not a good sign for Microsoft.

Young, adaptable audiences choose Mac, while people who are not willing (or able) to let go of the familiar Windows environment stick with Microsoft products. It's obvious that as time goes by, Windows' older user population will shrink. The future is, as always, held by the young. Though it's true that Windows strongly dominates the desktop market, it is also true that if Microsoft does not shape up and if Apple gets its break on enterprise clients, things are very likely to dramatically change.

Maybe the oldies know whats better ;)

Jokes apart, the surveys carried on the websites are extremely wayward of reality and untrustable.

Also, that is only stats from USA, not worldwide.

Why do you want to inflict flame man...if you think you're mature than you should behave like that. these comments are unwarranted.

I use Linux and Windows 50:50, so that makes me Mature+Professional+Office+Student!! Coincidently Yes though...:D
And with this post I am alos an Alpha Geek :D

I was a Slack user back in the x86 days. Now, I dual boot OS X and Ubuntu.

What really attract me towards Linux are the package managers. They're just fantastic. There is Fink for OS X, but again, that's for running Linux software on OS X.

A lot of people call trading as the 'real work'. Bloomberg Terminals run UNIX. :)

What platform do the Reuters products run on?

This article (http://www.aaxnet.com/design/linux2.html) may change your view if you think Linux is for Unprofessional Offices..
And this one (http://community.livejournal.com/appleworld/1010792.html) for MAC boys.:p

^^I think its all about experience. People keep on saying wateva they want to. Some say linux has got less desktop usage i.e not for end-users, then some say its not for professionals.

So if its not for end-users n professionals, then it means linux has no usage in the world of computing! Then how in the world its growing so fast? May be so many end-users/professionals running linux here and across the globe r just telling a lie then!

The thing which offices look or should look mostly is that they use one or two application at one time on there computers. Like if it is macdonalds Touchscreen Bill machine, it runs that particular software whole day. So like i have said before, why pay for a Big OS when you won't need its features.

Here is where Linux prevails. It can be so customised that most of the features can be removed to make it more resource friendly. I liked what mehul told me about using & compiling Gentoo for his own system, something possible only with Vista so far & .net 2.0+ (use ngen.exe)

Windows is what offices run, cos most of the employees learned computing on Windows boxes. So they are already familier with the enviroment & UI which results in low cost of training. Also, Microsoft or the OEM vendor provides support for the computer in case something goes wrong. Remember Linux awareness & education is still close to nill. Just tell me if you were in a bussiness enviroment what will you chose to run? Windows which has tech support very easily available or Linux which doesn't have that much tech support. Even if you switch to Gentoo from Ubuntu, you still have a lot to learn. Bussiness users don't have time to fix the computers themselves or wait for proper Linux help. They simply call the best tech support which is widely available out there, for Windows.

Mac were used for Creative works before 2001, because of which they are still used while new companies are there which also use Windows 2000\XP system cos that is really strong foundation for workstations tasks. With Pentium 4 & Windows XP, Microsoft has made a seriously good position in workstation market. SGI is out now

I have said before & saying it again. The problem with Apple is not the Mac, it is there marketing tactics, & arrogent users who somewhat act elite. There are so many professionals out there who use Mac but don't whine. Same goes with Linux & Windows users.

I Think Trying Vista Will Make U Think That Vista Has Been The Most Successful Windows in Terms Of Applications It's Handling Is Too Easy But Through Vista Microsoft Is Earning A Lot Of Money Cause Many Of The Utilities says That Video Card Not Compatible Buy One From Windows Marketplace You Need A tv Tuner Card For Windows Media Center Buy One
Etc

That's Why Many Of The Users Don't Want To upgrade To Vista And Saying VISTA Is Not Good Enough.
They Are Switching To Linux And Mac And Older Versions Of Windows (98,xp)

Everybody Seems To Know Here The Applications And Help Provided By Microsoft Is The Best .Which Answer To All Your Queries At Once
By Switching To Linux I Don't Find Many Advantages And Mac I Haven't Tried Yet .But I Will Get It Soon.

I knew this thread would turn into a "fight club" just by looking at its title!
Yeah but I feel MS needs to do a lot for security for Vista if it doesn't want to lose its share in the market as people will not like to have viruses roaming around in their PCs after spending on the software as well as hardware that they buy for Vista...

I never said Vista lacked security....But its just released...
Surely viruses will come out after a few months..thats when MS will be tested and if it comes out with a SP1 which plugs all the loopholes which results in no or just a few viruses then Vista will surely be successful and revive MS fortunes..

Security is the main focus in Windows Vista, features such as a locked kernal (which got removed due to Symantec ), UAC, Windows defender are all there to prevent it from security issues. Remember, the weekest link is the user, there is no prevention for a user who gets a warning but still installs that Free Porn dialer :D

So? Mac has a *nix base. Linux is a Unix clone. Does that mean they are "cheap developments"? Wats wrong in copying concepts? ISn't that a major thing that happens in software industry 24/7? I wud say stealing the code is a wrong thing!

Total cost of the developement of Vista is near to $ one billion

Ya right, have you used it yourself or just saying it by reading all the negative posts all over the net? Plz use it before you say anything. I m runing it here at 1 GB RAM from the last 1.5 years since beta 2 days. The performance has just incresed from each new build

:D Graphics card, yes. Decent ........ no comments, it does the job. Though i m buying a 6600GT AGP soon for OpenGL 2.0. Vista runs fine on my GeForce FX 5900XT though.
