Several rumors regarding a possible Google phone spread around the Internet, at first claiming that Google and Orange were in a partnership to provide a mobile phone manufactured by HTC and running Windows Mobile.

After that, leaked photos of the Google Switch showed up. Google's announcing that it is going to provide mobile services on select Samsung handsets was enough to make everyone believe that Google and Samsung actually built the Switch together.

At once, the Google/Orange/HTC idea was dropped and the Switch, made by Samsung was the actual thing. Since then, other rumors have also surfaced.

Reportedly, Andy Rubin, the founder of Danger, has a team of people at Google that is currently working on the Google Phone. And according to recent information, the Google phone will be a Blackberry-like, slick device, including many services like VoIP, vector-based presentation with Skia's technology, optimized Java running on the C++ core.

Also, the mobile phone with it's own OS is said to come with ad support and be extremely low cost or even free and it looks like it will end up being offered by multiple carriers instead of just one, since Google is said to be planning distribution relationships with several carriers by allowing them to minimize subscription and marketing costs.

Frankly, I'd rather believe the Google Switch version, since a big touchscreen phone is much more interesting than a low cost Blackberry look-alike. But the chances of the Switch coming to life are very slim, and if there's to be a Google phone, it will most likely be much more basic than that, and kind of like the device described here. With so many rumors showing up once in a while, in a short time, things are bound to become clearer.

A Google phone? I'd really love to see that.

I'll buy it if it comes at least a few months before the iPhone, as I'm gonna buy an iPhone next year.

This phone might not be an iPhone killer but as far as i can see ..google's main aim is to lauch mobile advertising in a big way through this phone which it has been talking about as the next "big" thing in advertising...

Google would never launch a product that competes with Apple's products. They are partners.

But they won't get even a single pence of the profit tht Apple makes from iPhone...it will not sit back and let apple take away a potential market just coz they are partners...motives of both Apple and Google are different in launching their phones...

2. Google Maps is integrated with iPhone. I don't know how Google earns out of their free services, such as Google Maps, but they surely profit in some way from it.
3. Google is not a hardware company.

Well they might not be manufacturing it but they surely are in a partnership(if the rumours are correct;) )
And as i said the motives of both Apple and Google are different...
Apple wants the mobile market share and google wants the mobile advertising share via entering into a partnership...

They might not be manufacturing it, well they don't need to. Most of the Mobile phones out there support JAVA anyway. It could be that a phone like...say HTC Sirius or SE W880i comes out but insted of the firmware or OS by Microsoft\Sony\Nokia it will have some kind of Google OS, that is certainly possible.

Even if Google is making a phone, am sure it wont end up looking anything like the spy snap above.. that snap looks clearly doctored.. notice how the phone is blurry and the wood grain in the background is soo clear.. photoshopped according to me ;)

IMHO the iphone is wayy too hyped..
