Digital Passion

Cover Story
Are We There Yet?
Just why are our “fast” connections poor excuses for broadband? Why is broadband always “next year”? Will it be this year? Or when? We ask those in the know about all the roadblocks

Insight
Enter The Matrix!
You probably didn’t know there happen to be several types of LCD panels! And no, they’re not just variants on a theme

Tomorrow
Tube Tech
The latest buzzword in hardware research circles is “the almighty carbon nanotube.” Here’s giving you an indication of the sheer range of applicat-
ions of this little marvel

Test Centre
Sonic Boom
A speaker set is a goodish investment—both in terms of money and pleasure. We took as much of a good, hard look as we could at what’s on offer

Digital Tools

Enhance
Gather Your Thoughts
Microsoft Office OneNote is an enhanced note-taking and organisation software. Did you even know it existed? Here’s about how to use it to organise yourself, whether you’re a scuba diver in the North Sea or a brain surgeon in Brazil

Bazaar
The attention-grabbers this month are a terabyte hard disk, a spanking new motherboard from Asus, and a device that lets you leech power off your laptop to charge your mobile devices

Know More About
A look at streaming technologies. What’s going on behind the scenes when you’re streaming, for example, a video on YouTube?

The Core Of The Matter
Buying a new computer? You’re deciding on the motherboard-processor combination, of course. Instead of looking at the components individually, Agent 001 is being more helpful by looking at combos

Test Centre
Laser Printers
We continue our laser printer test from last month’s issue. Presenting an assortment of mid-range mono printers for your office

Digital Business

Test Centre
Screening Success
This month: our annual projector test. We looked at solutions both for the boardroom as well as for the living room. As you’ll see, one size does not fit all—but this comparison should help clear matters

Case Study
Ditch That Wallet!
Paying using your mobile sounds a good idea. Services are limited as of now, but they’re indicative of the coming of age of m-commerce in India

Tech Careers
Driving The Numbers
Data drives business, as they say. Careers in databases are not for the faint of heart or head. Here’s a little introduction to what you can expect

Smart Business
Through The Ages
Version control software has been used by software developers since 205 B.C., and it’s time for you to consider whether it can help you in the office to track your documents

Digital Leisure

Touched By Tech
Lern frm whr u r!
People—especially illiterates and semi-literates—can now learn languages using their handsets. The applications are innovative, and the potential, vast

Gaming Special
No Boundaries
If you’re a gamer, chances are you know your hardware pretty well. But chances also are you need a refresher from time to time. Here’s one!

Game On
The last Star Trek movies weren’t the only lemons in the franchise—the latest game is terrible too! Also featuring RACE: The Official WTCC Game—simulation geeks rejoice!

Fast Track To Freeware
(You'll find nearly all the mentioned freeware on this time's CD/DVD, unless it was carried in the last two months)

Yes, it seems silly, but there are a lot of people who may not have SP2, or had SP2 but had to format and install regular Windows XP, etc. It's sort of an essential.

@rajivnedungadi: Send the links please....we'll review the lot.

Dear Fatbeing,

As sometimes we received our subscribed copy very late, it becomes even hard to take part in 'TAKE A CRACK'.

So, what you can do is always include 'TAKE A CRACK' in preview of magazine content in this forum. (You have missed the same in this month preview.) So we can take a look at current month's challenge in time. This way we will be at par with Mumbai based readers.

Thanks.

Just install the digit archive from any older digit CD/DVD and update it from the web...and then search it....you can see it by yourself.
Surely it will show the version no.

Update is not very large.

Digit did the speaker test this March and last time in May 2006.
There were a few speakers from last time's test.
Why are the scores differing sooo much for some of them ?(eg - Artis 111R)
It really confuses the long term reader and the one time buyer may end up making a wrong decision.
I think Digit should keep some kind of fixed format when they do these tests.
I don't mean that they should fudge the test results but there should be some continuity in the results.
Also if many top speakers were damaged during transit they might have postponed the test so that all commonly availabe sets were included in the test . This might have been qiuted difficult though.
The Fast Track to freeware was great and so were most of the magazine contents.

I bought my copy yesterday. The first thing that I read after getting the mag are the sections Enter, Escape, the reader's letters and the editorial because these are the pages that generally make the most entertaining read. This time even the editorial was funny. "Social networking reputation hack"- nice term.

I think the issue of Vista and DX10 is over hyped. I would not worry about DX10 right now because its really going to take ages (in computer terms) for DX10 games to become mainstream. Heck, even Crysis is not yet ready to release and we have been hearing about it for really ages ;) Even if DX10 games finally begin to come out, DX9 games won't going to phase out so easily just because too many users are still using Win XP and will continue to do so because there is no real need to upgrade. There is also the issue of hardware here. I feel that DX9 and DX10 are both going to co-exist and the majority of the games released would still be DX9 for a long time. So unless you desperately want to play Crysis there is no reason to upgrade to a DX10 card so soon.

Regarding the DVD interface, I have only one word - WOW!! The ability to change the wallpaper of the interface as well as the actual desktop was a nice touch. The "Vista Digit Edition" is becoming better and better with each build ;). Good work!!

But the FT was like "not again!!". I had enough of these petty software reviews and usually the same s/w were repeated like VLC, Avast and the like. Give us something better please!!

FatBeing
11-03-2007, 05:48 PM
You'll be able to preview another new addition in the April CD/DVD interface - it's not where we want it yet, and there are a lot more features to add to it, but it shows a lot of promise.

DX9 games are being developed even now and will continue to release till the end of the year and probably well into 2008, so there's plenty of time before the upgrade to DX10 becomes mandatory. Moreover, good games take a long time to develop, so I don't expect much from the first batch of DX10 games.

I am saving for an 8800 though :)

Automated reply! LOL!! Smart idea to deal with subscribers. You should have different types of replies and the mail server should send a randomly selected reply. This way the subscriber won't even know its an automated reply. :))

We've been out for a while now; which area are you in?

Keanu_reeves is mistaken; the preview was out on th 26th, not the mag.

Thanks for correcting me FatBeing but still it is 14th of March 2006 and i have not received the mag in Nasik.

Nasik Gets 24 hours delivery from Mumbai via courier. and I received PCworld on the 2nd from bangalore and PC Quest from Delhi on 5th. (Hope they use better couriers)

There was a lot of beta versions of most of the softwares[Ex: WinRAR]. Please stop bundling beta versions, atleast include stable versions.

Also some of the EXE's of self-extracting archives/setups were corrupt. Please check each & every EXE's before burning.

Which EXEs were this? We do test our software before burning, and we'll continue to do so.

Hm... grey area there. WinRAR is almost freeware, if you're willing to bear with the nagging. Ditto WinZip.
