if u r converting from .dat, just rename the file as *.mpg or *.mpeg.(*=the file name). :-P

^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Renaming doesn't exactly make a dat an mpg, although they r one & the same format.
Dat has additional data regd the VCD burnt too. Renaming doesn't remove them. This is the reason a dat file slightly larger than an mpg.
Also... dat is a universal format, enabling standard (read old) vcd players to read the format. The VCD format stores MPEG files under the .dat extension.
Also dat is mpeg-1 format, the initial video and audio compression standard and includes the popular Layer 3 (MP3) audio compression format.

VCDGear (http://www.vcdgear.com/) is good for the above... Its a program designed to allow a user to extract MPEG streams from CD images, convert VCD files to MPEG, correct MPEG errors, and more - all in a single step.

Other than Super, there's VirtualDub (http://www.google.com/search?&q=virtual+dub&btnI), a free video capture and AVI/MPEG-1 processing utility.

By renamin or without renamin... u can play dat files on any media player... yaar... no need of renaming.

Comin to ur question, mrintech, other than Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html), u can even try AviDemux (http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/), Jahshaka (http://www.jahshaka.org/), Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) and the old favourite VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/). All free and open-source.
