Combo drive not recognising discs

hello ppl..please help me on this one..

my combo drive(sony 52x32x52x16x) refuses to recognise any CD or DVDs' put in it...however it recognises it if the system is restarted with the disc in the drive...
could anyone please point out the problem? its driving me nuts...

try updating the firmware,.....BTW how old is ur drive???

happened 2 me too
but i formatted my pc and the problem vanished!
wait 2 see if sum1 else posts a remedy or format!

bought it just last year...

how do i upgrade the firmware?

During PC start without and disk in the drive...check the BIOS by presing del is ur system is showing combo conected ???
