what is svchost.exe

hello,
when i open my task manager in win xp, i get a lot of exe files named 'svchost.exe' running on my system. there are 6 of them running.
i wanted to know what these are and are they really necessary?

It is critical system process,don't delete it from task manager otherwise you pc will be restarted in 60 seconds everytime when you will delete....

if it appears in ur c/windows/system32/ then its a legit ms file; else malware !
