View Full Version : Microsoft Shuts Down Vista PatchGuard Exploit
I Hope McAfee, Norton, EU, Apple, Linux have achieved what they were trying to :mad:
Security firm Authentium has bypassed Windows Vista's PatchGuard kernel protection system and thusly has drawn the ire of Microsoft. Authentium's workaround allows direct access to the kernel without setting off any red flags from the operating system.
Not surprisingly, Microsoft was livid about the reports and claims that it has sealed off the Windows Vista in subsequent builds and will work to close off all other methods of accessing the core. Adrien Robinson, director of Microsoft's Security Technology Unit, states that "We have not received any other reports of ways to subvert the kernel in existing builds of Vista. If a vulnerability is discovered in Kernel Patch Protection, Microsoft will issue a security update as part of the standard Microsoft Security Response Center process."

Seriously dude, what role did Apple or The Open Source Foundation play in this?
Stop your blind fanboyism. It is getting irritating.

well...like i said previously, Microsoft cannot make Windows secure & feature rich, cos they are not allowed to
andy, it's just a free will to speak what he likes, even others say a lot of bad words regarding MS & Windows, we windows users never complain like this...seriously, no point arguing with u anymore, u r the Mod

Contradictions don't exist, do they?
Once people have expressed their opinion, then why conclude the discussion by saying "hey you're a mod here, we can't fight/argue with you".
On a technological topic, I believe everyone has the right to differ in his or her opinion. Some hate Microsoft, a few others hate Linux.
Anyway, regarding the fact that this article is in the "news" section:
A news doesn't remain objective news once you've pasted your opinion on top of it.
I believe, let the forum members decide whether Microsoft is being treated unfairly or not. Everyone has a sane mind capable of logical reasoning. If you wish to share a news, please share just news. We have a fight club for opinions.

One thing i have noticed in this forum is that, If u like linux you have to hate windows and laugh over the people who use windows. And according to my friend andy ppl who don't use osx are ment to be flamed , seriously if gx is one extreme side always defending windows no matter what , the other side is andy . Both are same .
similar is with linux users , if someone finds windows more useful and posts it on his blog , ppl are laughing over him in the open source section. If i use windows do i have to hate linux or vice versa, is this a rule? I think both systms have their merits and i enjoy them.
look guys im really sorry for posting that comment and deviating the topic ..... as gx MS aint allowed to create a good OS coz a lot of other ppl's bread and butter depends on MS not doing well so attempts are made to make sure that MS doesnt actually do well .... cmon andy u gotta agree to this that MS is not allowed to come up with a feature rich and secure OS
none the less coming back to the topic it is best interest on MS and its users that it blocks access to its Kernel
__________
and andy honestly man feels good to make some1 laugh .... good i cud make u laugh

its not that microsoft cant make 99.9999999% safe and sound OS. its just they dont want to. They CAN STOP PIRACY BUT INSTEAD They making us handicap by using their Products (Genuine/Pirated No matter what), and believe me they really have. And now when they tries to pull the cord, Stup ( My thinkin) People are considering to migrate to some Cheap/Free Platforms.
Okay Some Platforms other than windows are Good , but a Lion is a Lion Whether in a forest or in a Zoo.

And which side u windows fanboys think I am?? I never said windows is bad nor did I ever say it sucks! I only compared it with Linux in that thread and also said windows is better in gaming area! I'm not a mod atleast, so u windows fanboys can discuss it with me!!
I wud have really liked if windows had increased security and stopped the kernel level access coz I really don't like to use 3rd party security apps in windows. ITs all politics between MS,3rdparty antivirus companies ! They initiated it. BUt yea what open source and Apple have to do with it?? Do they also want kernel level access in some way?? Explain!!
im not getting a fight here with u (ur mod now) or any1
So what if @andy has become a mod?? Don't u argue with ur teachers and elders on a valid point?? U r saying like people who become mod go outta their brains and then start to swallow people alive!! Ur saying like mods r corrupt rulers with communist thinking who will kill people for voicing their opinions!
Neways seriously its very annoying sometimes that windows fanboys start hating open source and its members without any reason and say directly that they are responsible for it!! Its just ur stupid fanboyism.
Even if opensource supporting guys compare Linux and windows then whats wrong?? They are only comparing and not saying windows is bad or whateva! Don't u like windows to be compared to any other OS??
Neways, I agree its not sane to advice people to use Linux when they seriously and urgently need some help in getting there windows problem solved! But Nobody even adviced or compared here, but still u windows fanboys r launching a direct attack?? This is called hypocrisy. On one hand u don't want others to speak a word against windows or to be compared and here see what ur doing (below) and others even posting to support it!!
I Hope Apple, Linux have achieved what they were trying to
Both are same .
similar is with linux users , if someone finds windows more useful and posts it on his blog , ppl are laughing over him in the open source section
Dude, u shud know that people dont laugh without any reason!! If in the blog, the author has written something laughable, brought in Linux or apple in discussion and compared ignorantly and then said like "I need fragmentation tools and antiviruses for Linux and I can't live without these" then ofcors its laughable!! If u wanna verify what I'm saying then experience Linux and u urself will laugh out loudly and uncontrollably!!
If i use windows do i have to hate linux or vice versa, is this a rule? I think both systms have their merits and i enjoy them.
HAs neone said that its a rule?? I think u windows fanboys see people who compare other OS to windows as windows haters.....dont u?? NOw thats a misery!

@meditator, So u declared me a windows fanboy . Thats ok , but let me inform , i am a linux user(mostly for academic purposes) . Last thing i want is getting this thread turned into win vs linux flames, the thing i hate the most.
what mav3 posted in the first post is the example of blind hatred we ppl have against the product we don't use or dont want to use.
the corporate world is as cruel as indian politics and wen it comes to brining some1 down every1 joins forces, its a truth that MS's loss is a gain for open source and apple so wen it comes to bringing MS down no 1 is gonna leav any stone un-turned ..... thts all i said, thts my opinion .....
i dont hate linux or mac ..... neither do i luv em .... they are also options that a customer has ... and if a customer wants to use it hell what do i care .... please dont consider tht statement as anti-apple or anti-linux per say ..... tht satement is against the anti-MS lobby tht has developed over the years
andy, mediator and every1 else we all want a good OS dont v .... some feel linux is good some feel mac is good .....

Linux is not perfect either, but it definately magnitudes better than windows.
and it is very difficult to write secure software.
opensource is more secure because whenever a vulnerability is discovered, the Open Source folks patch it in a matter of hours, if not minutes Since the source is free and anyone can contribute a patch. Take a look at OpenBSD, they claim to be the most secure OS around.

@mav3...thats k! If u had just posted the news instead of comments that wud have been fine....but leave it! Technology news like these shudn't be a playground for Linux Vs windows debates. For that u have a thread in FIGHT CLUB, moreover windows fanboys shud debate there only when they have good experience on both Windows and Linux !

I think I know a tiny bit about the corporate world. It doesn't work as you say. This isn't some spooky crime thriller.
But then as some one said, "You're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts."

tht satement is against the anti-MS lobby tht has developed over the years No one needs to make any kind of "anti-MS" lobby in order to bring them down. They are doing it pretty good themselves...
After 5 years of development...chopping...changing and everything...they produce an OS that shows "complete crash" two days before its RTM? Didn't you post about it yourself?
http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39656
When they are screwing everything up without any help then why would any "lobby" waste time and money on them anyways?

eddie, they are finding bugs & they are fixing them...what else do u want them to do to make it better
chopping features, well....yeah, even i would bash MS on this....bad management i would say, all the worthy features of Longhron are gone, WinFS, Vector based UI, & lots more will come later as service packs or standalone files, well, thats good but still they were the features to get vista for along with the others included. Patchguard is one of them, which they removed due to lawsuits, which were not even filed in US when both Symantec, Mcafee & Adobe are US companies
(maybe, cos it's multinational)

eddie, they are finding bugs & they are fixing them...what else do u want them to do to make it better ...to find the bugs *before* they were bubble wrapping the CDs? The whole operating system crashes 2 days before the release was going out to hardware manufacturers? and that too after 5 years of coding? This is not *finding* bugs...this is sheer dumb luck. Imagine manufacturers installing it on thousands of systems and then updating them even before they sell them :D
MS has been finding bugs in vista for a long time .... from around 1500 bugs theyhv squashed around 1000 -1100 and are wrking on the rest ....

MS has been finding bugs in vista for a long time .... from around 1500 bugs theyhv squashed around 1000 -1100 and are wrking on the rest .... So they were going to RTM an OS with at least 400 known bugs?

Thats the whole difference the people here especially windows fanboys need to know, the difference between close source and open source software and intensity with which they r made bugless! Neways bugged after 5 yrs of coding? ! I guess it will take another 2-3 yrs in which they'll release some service packs, so that people can really work on it without any hindrances.
Imagine manufacturers installing it on thousands of systems and then updating them even before they sell them
:D SO I guess the OS that wud be released officially wud be called "MS VISTA : Patched n updated".
bad management i would say, all the worthy features of Longhron are gone, WinFS, Vector based UI, & lots more will come later as service packs or standalone files
Hmmmm, So MS will release other body parts and spare parts in installments again! Neways when will it release it?? It seems ur expectations were thwarted again!
