Mouse misbehaving

Recently i am having a problem like sometimes when i scrolls down a page using the mouse scroll wheel the whole page moves up and down erratically.The LED of the sroll ball blinks when this happens.Is it a hardware problem or is there a virus in my XP.It scrolls perfectly if u r dragging it using the mouse pointer.The mouse was working fine the day before. PLEASE Help!

Try going to control panel > Mouse.
Goto the wheel tab on top, and see which is selected. If it says one screen at a time, it'll move erratically. Change it to 3,4 or 5 lines at a time.
