Great contents!
Seems like the retransformation of digit has begun atlast(since last issue). Articles seem to be getting better from the august issue. So far so good. I feel that this issue will be better than all digit issues in the past 1 yr. Last issue was fantabulous, this issue 'seems' better as far as the preview is concerned.
Looking fwd to it.

Great ! but i have already downloaded all these things. :D:D:D:D Well me too buddy. Have a fast internet connection at my institute. Speeds upto 85 kbps. A 150 MB file downloads in an hour.
Was expecting a motherboard review. Anyways looking forward to the graphics card review. 65 cards seem to be a huge lot. They should start doing mobo & graphics card reviews more often. There are new mobos & display cards in the market every 1-2 months
Hope November cd/dvd contains useful things for us ! Same here.
Looking forward to more game reviews. I think they should provide demo versions of games they review each month. Atleast the end-user will be satisfied cos sometimes reviews are not just enough

Being a somewhat of an LotR nut, I have to point out that Humphrey Carpenter's biography & Shippey's books are more valuable than Martinez' Parma Endorion; all the so-called essays included in his book can be encountered in the LotR-Trilogy & The Silmarillion.

Got the magazine yesterday from newsstand.
And was very disappointed. By what??
Well, the magazine of course.
Was never interested in this month's CD & DVD which were both missing from my pack (yes, both). Only got the magazine, Fast track & a blank jewel case.
Have wrote to the Digit Helpdesk regarding the issue with no response as of now.
Anyway, I was hoping that graphics card test drive would also include AGP cards. But alas, no AGP cards.
I would like to mention to the Digit Team that still most of the PC's here in India (or shall I say World) still have AGP slots which the Digit Team has clearly forgotten. Even if the vendors didn't send them the AGP cards themselves, they should have asked for them specifically later.
It would have been no problem if they had published the test drive a month later i.e. in November 2006 but it should have complete.
They didn't even mention that whether in future we can expect a test drive on AGP cards too.
125 bucks down the drain.
I demand that they publish a test drive on AGP cards in November or December 2006 issue.

Ok FatBeing you want to know more, you get it. First of all let me congratulate you on bringing out a fantastic graphics card review. This is how it ought to be. This was something which was missing in the last few issues. But I still have some complaints:
1. You could have brought some varity to the test by pairing the cards is SLI and cross-fire mode. This would have really helped the high end gamers.
2. The maximum resolution used for testing the high end cards is 1600*1200 which I think is not at all the resolution that high end gamers use. You also totally leave out on WideScreen resolutions.
3. You could have used HDR while testing the games. Tests on Quake 4 would have been appreciated.
Suggestions:
1. Please try to provide the street prices of whatever you review below thier box prices. This would give us a true idea of the price and what we can afford.
2. Please use 2GB of RAM to test the high end cards as this has now-a-days become a norm to use 2GB or more RAM to bring forth the true potential of these cards.
I hope you people are listening and please try to reply.
Finally keep up the good work and keep getting better.
:p

POOR LAPTOP RESEARCH
i was eagerly awaiting ur october issue when i saw it on the news-stand. it fascinated me because of 2 thing- the laptop shootout and the "career in post-production" as i want to buy one and i was researching laptops for the past 1 month on the net and in local shops and had contacted all 10-12 laptop making companies in india (thanks to u for featuring their ads and contact nos. in various issues) and i am interested in a career in multimedia(sound/video recording and editting/post-production)
but i was dissapointed because u havent done ur research well on the laptop shootout & more info on post-production cud b given,
first u failed to mention the following things
1-dell is the only company in india which allows laptop customization and lets u build with ur own configuration to suit ur needs and budget and also provied complete cover and replaces the whole laptop incase of water spills, drops ,etc.
2-dell is the only company providing core2duo laptops in the series, which no other laptop companies are doing at the moment and the inspiron 9400 with nvidia go7900GS
customize laptops here http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks_in?c=in&l=en&s=bsd
or goto www.dell.co.in
which is cheaper than the sony in the "desktop replacement" category.
3-and even with the core2duo and the following configuration, inspiron 6400 stays below the 70000 mark.
CORE2DUO T5500 1.66 667MHZ FSB
xp sp2 home
1024*1=1GB DDR2 667MHZ DUAL CHANNEL
ATI Mobility 1400 256mb
120GB 5400 /80gb 7200rpm HDD
15.4"WXGA SCREEN
90w adapter
large backpack
atleast u shud have reviewed the core2duo inspiron 6400 model separately
4-u failed to mention HP dv6114tx in the "usual suspects" which is a good model with MCE 2005 and the latest in the 6000 series in India so muchso that a google search of "hp pavilion dv6114tx" returns just 1 search
there many forums on the net like "www.notebookreviews.com" ,etc. about which u shud have mentioned as extra resources
and as for the goofs
the "hitachi hdd" ad features a "flash based sandisk mp3 player" as comparison. shouldnt they be showing a "hdd based mp3 player"
also i expected more on the topic of "career in digital post-production" like
the pay, work involved and the recruiting companies and news channels, field of sound engineering
also u failed to mention the "SAE-school of audio engineering" college with branches in mumbai, delhi, chennai, etc. with reputed facutly like SP Balasubramaniam for audio engineering
and the course fees and courses offered by various colleges
__________
also mobile gpus shud have been included in the review since u were already testing laptops
__________
why not give a bumper december issue with
all prodcts shootout?
like u had a gpu shootout this month, why not have a shootout of all products from cpu's to hdd's?? it wud mean ntimes more work 4 u nd double price 4 the december issue but im sure its possible

First and foremost, why weren't Apple MacBooks and MacBook Pros included in the laptop shootout? And why was there absolutely no news about the launch of the new iMac lineup with Intel Core 2 Duo processors? You haven't reported anything about Mac OS X Leopard and you haven't covered the launch of the new range of iPods. It would have been fine and dandy had you been ignoring Apple completely but you are always quick to report whom Apple is blaming for copying their features or whom they are suing. I know you have always favoured Microsoft and do not pay much attention to Apple (except for the iPods), but this is just too much. You could at least have taken the trouble of pitting the Apple notebooks against the competition to see how they fared.
This issue was a total waste of money anyway. The only articles I found worth reading were: Editorial, War for search, The Best Yahoo! Widgets, The Ultimate Home Jukebox, Agent 001, Notable Portables, Of Brands and Brawn, Game On: Prey, Tabloid Tech and the Regulars. It did not even take me twenty minutes to finish the magazine. And this time I did not even have the Fast Track to look forward to. I know it is pretty subjective but I really don't care about Digital Video (and most average people don't either). The DVD/CD were useless too. I did not even break open the seal. You should provide us with full Linux distros and the like, things that take a long time to download.
I have always bought the mag from newsstands without even looking at the cover for the past two years but after the huge disappointment of this issue, I have to be selective in the future. After all, a hundred and twenty five bucks is a lot of money if it buys you just twenty minutes of reading pleasure.

It has a lot to do with the fact that products are reviewed which the manufacturers provide for shoot-out and not the other way around to the best I know. Dell probably wanted a more 'powerful' feature packed laptop and hence they provided a fairly hi-end T2600. The shootout must have been done quite a while ago, and considering meroms have just made their way in the past month - you can forgive digit for that.
I liked the laptop shootout. It was fairly comprehensive and covered most brands in different form factors.

None of the laptops had a core 2 duo processor not even the Sony blu-ray one. This shows the tests are already outdated. The core 2 duo must have permformed much better than the core duo ones.

I liked the article "Of Brands and Brawn". People need to understand this very thing that the most popular brands isn't always the best. Companys spend millions of rupees each year on ads just because people are so easily fooled by what is shown in the TV. Not very long ago some MNC paid Sachin Tendulkar Rs 180 crores for endorsing their product. What the heck!! 180 crores!! Obviously a company can afford to spend such an obscene amount because they know that the return will be much higher. As long as consumers continue to buy products just because Sachin Tendulakar or Shah Rukh Khan (the king of over-acting) tells them to buy it, we are going to see more such wastage of money through such star-contracts. Hell!! its our money that the companys are wasting on ads.
I wish more such articles were published in more magazines to increase consumer awareness.

Soham....here are the reasons for all your burning questions...
1. 1600 x 1200 is the perfect resolution for high end testing (unless multi GPU is being used) simply because games stutter at anything higher.. The objective of any test is relativity of performance, not to measure the minimum fps that a card can churn out.
2. Also try running a 19 inch monitor at 1600x1200. Sure the monitor supports it, but you'll need to disable most of the eyecandy in games like FEAR (by eye candy I'm talking AA and AF, HDR, soft shadows etc) simply because the card won't be able to handle them. Once again we test at settings which achieve the best compromise between fps and visuals which is the eternal dilemma faced by all gamers. A game looks better at 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 8x AF than at 1600x1200 with all these settings off. I hope you get my drift here....
3. HDR has been used for farcry, splinter cell and FEAR.... DOOM 3 doesn't support HDR with SM3. I hope you realise that SM3 is a direct X effect while DOOM 3 is Open GL
4. Widescreen - well most games that we tested don't support widescreen natively, if at all. Farcry does support widescreen, but well let me ask you, how many widescreen gamers exist among our audience? Yes the numbers are on the rise, with widescreen TFT's, but a major chunk of people still opt for CRT's (no widescreen there) or regular TFT's. Maybe a couple of years down the line widescreen resolutions would make more sense, when a majority of gamers and games are using them.
5. Quake 4 is a very CPU bound game. i.e. it doesn't really scale well. I hope you realise we don't just wake up one day and go "ooh lets test graphics cards this month", we tried at least 10 games before finalising on the 4-5 most feasible ones. To further clarify, our initial tests on Quake 4 got nearly similar scores across cards in similar categories (with the usual Nvidia - ati differences of course). Additionally DOOM 3, Quake 4 and Prey use the same DOOM 3 engine, which has been optimised on the latter two games.

I hate to say it but Digit Sucks
They've rated Dell Inspiron 6400 as the best noebook.
But see the configuration for the same laptop in the Magazine and in Dell's Website(http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks_in?c=in&l=en&s=bsd). Different configuration for same laptop?????????????
Now don't say that Website is wrong.....
This shows how detailed Digit reviews are.... they just copy paste the config(wrong ones too...) and rate it..... Shame on u digit

We did approach Lenovo for their contenders, but as a policy, they don't send laptops for comparison tests.

I found this month's FT to Open Source Software an informative read. If not a comprehensive one, it's still a good basic guide to some of the popular OSS alternatives available out there.
Much appreciation!
