A DiVX codec is enough.. It decodes XviD too.. Try opening it in VLC player if u have some problems. And yes, DivX DVD players will play XviD too!

I have no problem to play them in my PC. I am planing to buy a new Philips DVD Plyer which says it can play DivX but it is silent on XViD. I checked co's site but did not get anything particular :?. Local dealers have no idea of what XViD is !!!

does sony divx players play xvid too.And how do you find whether the codec is divx or xvid as only video file is written underneath the .avi file?

Google for "Gspot" utilility,
It will show all the details regarding the File format, Aspect ratio etc....
Also it is there as an option in KLM codec Pack installer to install Gspot also.

i have philips DVP642K DVD player, i tried to play some .avi files on it, some are encoded using DivX codec and others by Xvid, some played without any problem but other displayed big squares like we see in some old scrached VCD disc.
and those who played without a problem are from both codec Divx and Xvid, i can't understand y is it not able to play some of the Xvid coded file properly.
the vids r playing smoothly in my PC, and my DVD player also supports DivX format.

you maY want to try AUTOGK. its a nifty utility for all this. google for it.
note: while encoding video in autogk chose ess+ as the standalone compatibility standard over sigma as most dvd players seem to support it.

AutoGordian Knot is decent for all DVD to divx conversions. For the rest I use a combination of VirtualDub and AviSynth. Google around you'll find lots of info.

almost all divx players play xvid , XviD is a free and open source MPEG-4 video codec. XviD was created by a group of volunteer programmers after the OpenDivX source was closed in July 2001. So the codecs are similar.

AutoGordian Knot works superb for me too, though a small Piece of Advice
if you define the size of the output file, it does a double pass compression and it takes a lot of time....Instead try setting the Percentage quality near to 65% and u will be able to convert your files considerably faster....
And it uses standard xvid codec by default or you may use Divx codec too (Option in advanced options)
So you can enjoy DVD movies encoded with AutoGK on any divx certified player...
Cheers.
