Violence in games is perhaps as old as games themselves and is the vein of the action genre. Some games add it to enhance the gaming experience while some merely add it for shock value. In the past few years the media has blown violence in games out of proportion with crimes some how linking themselves to games. Have developers crossed the line with some of these titles? Should violence in games be taken lightly? Do violent games affect human psyche? For the answers to all of the above, read the news.

In this article, Techtree presents a list of ten most violent games that would give parents the world over nightmares and should definitely not let their children play unless they want them to grow up and become mass murderers.

Manhunt (2003)
Developer: Rockstar North

Easily one of the most twisted games ever made, Rockstar's snuff film inspired game, Manhunt, stirred up quite a storm with its over the top violence and extremely gruesome executions. Even though a lot of the violence was added for pure shock value, deep down the game was a message and that is, humans will go to any extremes to be entertained. Loosely resembling the story of the movie- The Running Man, Manhunt put you in the shoes of James Earl Cash, a convict who's forced to participate in a macabre version of hide and seek, orchestrated by one Lionel Starkweather (The Director), an outcast Hollywood director.

The Punisher (2005)
Developer: Volition

Based on the comic book of the same name, The Punisher is the story of Frank Castle, an ex-marine who becomes a vigilante of sorts after his family is killed by the mob. Hell bent on revenge, Castle becomes The Punisher seeking retribution on criminals everywhere.

POSTAL 2: Apocalypse Weekend (2005)
Developer: Running with Scissors

Apocalypse Weekend is a stand alone expansion for Running with Scissors infamous title, POSTAL 2. POSTAL 2 was all about your average trailer trash anti-hero who goes postal due to a lot of reasons, one being his ***** of a nagging wife. The game was deemed controversial as you could slaughter innocent (and most of the time unarmed) civilians and not so innocent Taliban any way you felt like. Shoot them, burn them, melee them to death with your shovel, play fetch with their severed head with your dog or pee on their bodies. A wafer thin story, characters you didn't give a **** about and an insane amount of load time made this game fun for like a day or so.

Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (2002)
Developer: Raven Software

Released in 2000, Soldier of Fortune (SOF) let you play as John Mullins, a Soldier of Fortune working for an organization known as "The Shop". His aim: to annihilate terrorist scum all over the globe.

Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now (1998)
Developer: SCi

Way back in 97, long before the Underground culture hit the racing scene, a small company called SCi was busy making headlines with it's unique and ultra-violent racer called Carmageddon. This game had you racing in some kind of bleak post-apocalyptic future; but its USP was you could mow down helpless citizens while you battled it out with your opponents. In many countries, the game was only released when pedestrians were replaced by zombies because it's ok to kill the dead, right?

BloodRayne 2 (2004)
Developer: Majesco

Simply put, BloodRayne was all about a hot half-naked vampire chick slaughtering a lot of Nazis. This game boasted of a lot of violence and sexual undertones but failed to become a commercial success. It however did allow you to decapitate your foes into pieces and since Rayne's a vampire the only way she could replenish her health was by drinking the blood of her enemies.
Once you shot off someone's arm or legs they would try to crawl away and end up bleeding to death. A grenade thrown into a room full of enemies would result in a huge explosion of blood followed by a whole platter of severed heads and hands, legs and sections of torsos lying all over the place.

Chiller (1986)
Developer: Exidy

None of you have probably even heard of this game, but right here is one of the sickest games ever made. Even though Manhunt and The punisher were thoroughly violent; they had you slaughtering people who sort of deserved it. This abomination called Chiller had you mutilate tortured prisoners (men and women) who are already chained up. You had a myriad of ways to dispose off them which included decapitating them with a guillotine, tear their bodies apart using a torture rack, or lower them into a river of blood so they can be eaten by alligators (WTF!) or just shoot their body parts till there's nothing left, all this while they're handcuffed and defenseless. This game gave sadism a new meaning.

Shadow of Rome (2005)
Developer: Capcom

Caesar's murdered, your father's been falsely framed for his murder and your mother's just been slaughtered in public. What do you do? Well if you're Agrippa (one of the central characters in this game), you'll probably become a gladiator and paint Rome with the blood of your enemies; with the help of a friend who obviously is a big fan of Sam Fisher.

Painkiller (2004)
Developer: People Can Fly

Painkiller was the story of Daniel Garner, a seemingly normal man who meets an untimely demise along with his wife. He ends up in purgatory (a place between heaven and hell) while his wife ends up in heaven. The only way he can meet her is by battling the endless minions of hell. Let the pain begin

Burnout Revenge (2005)
Developer: Criterion

On the surface BOR may seem a harmless racer, but deep down it is one of the most violent racers since Carmageddon. Think about it; this game encourages you to reduce your opponents to a steaming pile of metal, crash head on into oncoming traffic (which basically consist of innocent people driving about) and then detonate your car which rules out the possibility of survival (there could be children in those cars too, you know), and even hit traffic into your opponents, causing a pile up. Sick and demented, this game has managed to fool us all thanks to its innocent Teen rating.

So becare, don't let your childrens play this game !

Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now

This brings back memories. Those were the days. grinding people uder your car wasnt considered politically incorrect. :p

TDR2000 sucked because of the zombie crap. Carmageddon II was the best of all the three Carmageddon games.
