well I am into some serious trouble and asking some tech help , but u have to go-through my story first and then give me some remedies

This is a very common problem and I am sure some of us in this forum already faced/facing/will face the same problem .

I am away from my home city for job and I do software coding in a MNC . I live with 4-5 IT/BPO profs in an apartment and here only I have my PC which now has become the center of attraction to all my friends and this is the main reason where the trouble starts .

Actually my salary is somewhat higher so I bought TV tunar...pay the cable and same about internet also .well I pay this is not the problem . I mainly use the computer for a website-project I am doing ( NOT my office project ) , I prepare for some online exams . what happend is that my friends here used to see porns here at my PC all the time ( through net and through CDs also ) and it happened that they act like the owner of the computer . there are many other issues .even for them I dont allow to get access to my pc . I have taken net only for my purpose but things start with “ I just want to ck my mail one time “ and these requests grew . well just cking mails may not be a problem but they download email attachments , porns which cost a lot of bandwidth ( I have a limit of 512 MB per month ) …….and obviously some virus . well it is not that I never see a porn but for them internet is just a tool for porns and nothing else and they see it for all the time .
Now remedy for this problem also lies in my hand

1. the easiest is > I can change my home and live seperately . Which I will do if I don’t find any intelligent solutions from you .

2. another solution is I can kick-out internet / cable tv because I can connect through the office also > But I do some work through the net . and I am not kicking the cable line now because of the incoming FIFA world cup . with this another thing I can do is to change my OS other than WINDOWS . well those BPO guys may not handle Linux very efficiently .

3. I can change appearance of windows with some annoying DOCKs / shell replacements like that ..

I think now you have got enough idea what my problem is …………………………give me some intelligent solutions .

If you are using XP, you can consider password protecting your PC. XPs password protection scheme is quite powerful enough to keep your pesky eavesdroppers away from your systems internals.

Another alternative is talk to your mates and peers and explain to them about your problems and stress on the need for your privacy. If they have a heart, they may stop soon.

Good Luck!

As DeSmOnD dAvId suggested, password protect your PC. They won't be able to get past the welcome screen after that. :)
However, your mates might be shameless and might directly ask you to remove the password or something along those lines. Well, give 'em a blunt no and that's it! Why do you need to listen to them?

1. That's upto you actually.
2. Installing Linux might help initially but I guess they will figure out how to use it eventually. And don't you have a TV?
3. That WON'T work, assuming they are not a big bunch of dunderheads!

Ok here is a genuine thing you can do actually restricting them and not becoming bad. u might be using a user account right so what u do is make that user account a really really resticted account. Create another user account for yourself and keep no restictions for urself. This way u might not become bad. But 1 thing u need to be well verse with windows xp for that and hence dont crap up ok. Good luck with that and play on mate u might get ur badla some day.

if u live with someone tell your friends that he/she does not like u(ur friends).so u should come to my place rarely.alternatively when they come to your home. u can say that its its boring in the home lets go for a simple walk or any place outside even to ur freinds home.the basic idea is that to keep them away from ur pc.or even they hang to your pc just be wuth them all the time and watch some movies( not porn offcource ! !)

gary

well this is a tricky situation.... u sud handle it carefully.... i dont have a solution but can tell you something...
these roommates can be nutmegs. i v known roommates esp. girls who come over often behave in a shocking manner.
the moment you giv them some room they will take full advantage. you dont allow them to use your PC or lappy they mite well destruct your machine.

one such incident faced by my friend's roommate. he didnt allow his roommates and friends to use his lappy. whn he was away they jus dropped his 50k lappy frm 5 feet height and later said .... kaamvali ne gira diya

I can only pity you guys who are too good to tell things straight to the face when you face some inconveniences with their petty behavior.
If you feel bad, then, just make a deal with them saying that if you watch any more porn on my system, I would have to lock down so that you wouldn't be able to access my system over all. Install a keylogger and note down their movements. If you find any then go ahead, don't tell them. DO IT. they will know and they won't ask you. Usually in these situations, you give them something they can't resist and have a condition posed on and when they break it, they feel guilty and embarassed and then you have the upper hand and you can raise your voice to your friends which you had trouble doing genuinely even though they are exploiting you and you know it! :)

1. U can torture them by insisting them to watch some art movies when u see them capturing a hold of ur pc.

2. Install linux.

3. Just tell them straight.

just disable their access to the system.
set up a BIOS password so that none but you can use the pc.
but first, request them to stop using it.
