Degaussing is necessary only for CRT (cathode ray tube) based monitors and not LCD's (like what's used in your laptop). CRT's are affected by magnetic fields and the resulting colour imperfections can be corrected using the degauss option.

the discolouration is caused by a faulty LCD panel.

How can u possibly have a magnetic build up in a liquid Crystal display screen????? The discoloration is due to the faulty panel....Its DEFINITELY not due to any stray magnetic fields....
