This thread is for readers of Digit to give us suggestions of what you would like to read more about in Digit, or what you think should change, both in the magazine as well as the discs.

Any suggestions are welcome, but please understand that we're not going to be implementing all of them—at least not the ridiculous ones! :)

No bashing or comparisons to other mags please! And no talking about particular issues, this is just a general suggestion box about sections you feel should be added or removed and why. Remember, the WHY is very important for us and others to understand the logic behind your suggestions.

Members and Team Digit are free to agree or disagree with you here, so don't start flame wars... opinions not arguements please!

Ok here's my wish list.

Please try to add more articles on internet and try to work in this field.
Start a whole new sections in which you review websites.
The present one is only 3 Small Boxes with some details.
Make it 10! And a whole page on it!

Well! you see, if you can add the followings sections it would be very nice for the mag readers and for your circulation increase.

SECTIONS to be added:

1. INTERVIEW SECTION

What will be in this section or say what i would like you to put in this section is, you ought to interview someone from the TECH world and not just some filmstar and all who just uses a one or more tech products.

So, basically, you would be interviews some one like for example the IT Minister, and ask him question on the present day Scenario and his vision to see India in the next 5 to 10 years.

You can also interviews people like Infosys chairman, etc, IT ministers and tech related people who visit India.

Well! How about an interview with Bill Gates ?

2. READERS CONTRIBUTION :

Well! This section would be as simple as its name, yes ask the READERs to write article on tech, and publish it if it fits with the profile of the mag. Would be nice.

3. Put some special SECTIONS towards OFFICE SERVERS , tip -N -tricks, installation bugs, BEST way to run this servers and software / hardware which runs them, put everything about SERVERS in here.

This is a much needed SECTION, since, both desktop and OFFICE CEOs/CTOs/CIOs/MDs etc will directly look into it and hopefully, your mag will reach to different section of people who are tech, tech, tech... OFFICE Managers, Adminstrators, etc.

4. And yes put some CARTOON SECTION as well, put some fun cartoon of bill gates and IT ministers and the like, but make stories out of it like NDTV does (This is not a comparision, put your own ideas and imagination)

Digit Magazine or CD doesnt contain any programming code eg. some good VB or ASP code, by which small or newbie programmers can benefit. I would suggest u includde some sample or working programming code so that new programmers can try some new things.
I would also suggest to add a column in CD version for code supplied for digit users. There are somany users who r interested in sending their codes, so that others can see their code also they can be benefitted by others code/ideas.

Hope u will think on this and do some help for small programmers like us.

There is no doubt that Digit is one of the best tech magazine, and forum is also very good.

One regular section in magazine for programming tutorials like Visual Basic, VC++ etc will be
cherry on cake. And please include some source code in CD/DVD regularly, readers also can
contribute for the same.

No one can satisfy expactations of all the readers, but Digit CD/DVD contents is always better than other.

Please give some serious thoughts to these suggestions that I am going to give you.

1. You guys need to improve the quality of the articles you carry on your magazine. Rather than technical news give technical 'how-it-works', 'what-is-it' type of articles.

2. Please do away with sections like "One silly question", "Genders Benders" etc. They are totally useless. From where do you get hold of these boys and gals? From the streets?

Also remove these:
#Old way, Tech way....useless section.
#30 days with.... another useless one. Why do we need to know someone's personal diary. Topics which are not related to technology should not be there in the mag.

3. Provide workshop articles. Both hardware and software. I would like to see software workshop of atleast one s/w every month, particularly the s/w carried on the CD/DVD of that issue.

4. Provide more software reviews.

5. Please hire a different cartoonist. The cartoons by Harsho Mohan Chattoraj are really ugly. Instead of carttons why dont you give some artistic drawings. Computer graphics will do but not cartoons please.

I disagree with blackpearl at some points. What I feel is the sections such as One Silly
Question , Gender Bender , Old Way Tech Way , 30 Days With... , are somewhat
important , though not essential, because we read them after reading a tech-heavy
article to ease the pressure on our BRAIN-RAM. Though the section Gender Bender can have more difficult challenges than the present ones.

Well , this is my personal opinion,to keep the sections. this should not arise
any conflict with blackpearl :-)

I would like to see articles on career in IT and ITES field , as I would help the largest segment of DIGIT readers , who are technical students. As requested above you can reduce ADs , and instead give sponsered articles on higher studies in technology field.

Now for suggestions .. Make that FastTrack bimonthly or tri .. But give us 2 Dvds .. I can afford 150 Rs too :D .. But give updated contents in Dvd yaar ..

Try making two different versions .. Two Cd version and two dvd version .. Two cd version can be cheaper .. and it will be attractive for those who dnt have Dvd drive (I dont know many though :P) ..

And yeah .. Make it more interactive .. Increase Reader's contribution section .. The forum gets too little coverage in the mag . .. increase that ...

And yeah .. Change the DVD / CD interface .. I hate Flash ... You can create a menu for users to select between HTML and Flash interface .. But do that ..

try and stay on top of autopatcher updates

by general rule he updates it every second week of the month .. so it might be wise to check then ...

autopatcher updates are very handy .. atleast for me ....
and try to keep it on both cd or dvd .. or only on cd .. my offcie dun have dvd drive :D

I Won't Say:-
1. Stop the ads! Di9it has to survive and pay it's employees, I wudn't want my fav mag go extinct.
2. Give us the very latest autopatcher updates. I dunt care. They are of no use to me.
3. Give equal importance to Windows and Linux. Most Di9it readers use Windoes and it is natural they they give importance to it.
4. Give a distro a month. Useless.

I Would Rather say:-
1. Give us just 200 Mb of good quality FOSS Softies each month along with any kernel security patches if you desire.
2. Publish good articles either in tips n tricks or as seperate section for making a newbie comfortable with linux.
3. Give two distro's a year. (June and Dec) Seriously yaar, Two major ones. (Your liking BSD and/or Linux)
4. Give good account on Open Source programming languages, For Example you could start with python tutorials. Python is a very easy as well as a powerfull programming language that is easy to learn and implement. It is usually recommended as a first programming language.
5. Start a section to fight piracy to educate people to buy proprietary softwares or use FOSS softies.
6. PLZ PLZ for god sake don't use the terms 'Hacker' or 'Hacking' when you mean 'cracking'. It doesn't do justice to the hackers community.
7. Keep up the good work.

Will Digit Change the title of Open Source Section to Open Source/Linux.
this is for the sake of n00bs who dont know what is Open Source and Linux is a Open Source OS.

1. OpenOffice needs to be given more and regular converage. We know 90% of the people use pirated MS Office even for writing letters that can be written in notepad! :roll: Let Digit use its reach and influence on people to reduce piracy and promote free software ;) :D

2. Some better products for Patron points! As of now only old unused stock of things is offerred in return of points!

3. Please get rid of that irritating flash interface of CD/DVDs! Why can't you give an HTML format? HTML and Javascript has been used since so long for creating some wonderful interfaces! You don't need to bother about SEO here, use frames :lol: if you need to.

4. A section of programming/development (including Javascript, PHP, ASP, etc.) will be wonderful. Nimish is on the right track. Go for it!

5. Get rid of useless stuff like Gender Blender, One silly (admittedly!!) question, old way - tech way, etc. Its all non-sense! Whoever needs a break from other tech-heavy :roll: articles can keep Digit aside and do something else for some time.

@ teamdigit guys: Many i know in this forum are requesting either a Fast Track book or a seperate section in the mag for FOSS/Linux. You can also add some articles on making profits with FOSS softwares so that people don't think that we cant make money if we choose a career based on FOSS.

Hey Admin, heres a quick suggestion. Why dont you switch to vBulletin/IPB for digit forum. They're are more customiseable softwares as far as forums are concerned. Also, their are far too many mods available for IPB.

How about going back to the html format for CD content descriptions instead of flash presentations or atleast provide a txt file describing the CD content as it was some 3-4 years back? I find html more customizable. Since i have a mild eye problem I need this. Thanks for listening.

In this month's issue, the column "Free for all" was a great one which I found. Please try to make this a regular column (if not present, atleast hereafter) for not only on Business heading, but also for many other topics like Media, Music, Readers, Free printers for making pdf copies (eg. PrimoPDF), etc. This although proved useful by making them available in this month's DVD, what about those who doesn't have a DVD drive? Hence please provide a URL for members in this forum and DIGIT readers of course, so that one could download themselves!

I am not a professional. But I want certain things to be done in Digit.
One is that the cover designs of the CD and DVD are not good. In the previous issues i.e. of Oct, Nov and Dec were good enough but in the recent issues the designs are not good.
Secondly i agree with raval_manoj that there sould be a section of programming tutorials.
There is no doubt that this is India's No.1 magazine.

Suggestions:

Start a forum like graveyard where we can see the old posts and topics. This will help in easing the length and mess of the main pages too.

Give as much ebooks in the DVD/CD possible.

give the latest versions of commonly used apps, the versions in the DVD/CD are mostly 2-3 months old.

Include fast track bimonthly, if not possible monthly.

And most important of them all, please include at least last three issues of the magazine in the CD each month, so as to help the readers who have missed them.

Stuff like that. del.icio.us is a really great idea which more people should get to know, and digg is another good concept.

I think you should include a video of the testing process and the various products you review.It would be much nicer seeing the process in action .

or you could give a video tutorial of installing a hardware component or software. :D

Hi I'am Kaustav Acharya a student of class XI.I liked the old digit.Digit's new avatar is not that attractive.Now instead of being a 'special' geek magazine it has been reduced to a just another mass 'tech' magazine.

It now contains more offtrack articles, rather than core tech articles,product reviews and hands on workshop.

I don't understand why there are more articles on business than on modding?More articles on what people think of technology than what drives that technology? More articles on wheres and whens than on how and what ??:-?

Guys this is a tech magazine for 'geeks'.Sure ! its our technology navigator but it doesnt have to be so down to earth .Guys put more attitude in the articles. Include short but informative articles.Please increase the number of articles.!!!!!please!!!!!!!

Now the articles are bigger and fewer than before.They are also hollow and confusing ,requiring more clarification.Well we ARE geeks but we are not rocket scientists! :)

I loved the hardware workshops digit published before.

I used to love the exotic hardwares in droolmaal.

I used to loved the hardware and software reviews.

Now most of these are either missing or are negligible in quantity and quality. Digit's present format of magazine is uninspiring.The colours are meek are silent.

I have no complaints about the interactive contents.These can be changed any time.But its the magazine which attracts us readers.The fast track's great.I also have no problem with the PAPER quality but the QUALITY of the THE ARICLES needs a lot of improvement.

Please do away with gender benders, techway-oldway,tech tabloid,one silly question and other useless stuff.

Kindly ponder over my thoughts that i have expressed.I've joined the forum recently.But whenever i view the feedback section ,its full of complaints.Why are you guys giving any scope to complaint??

My final advice:: PLEASE REVERT BACK TO WHAT DIGIT WAS LIKE IN 2002-2004!!!!

Actually this is a Demand post but I thought it better to post it in the suggestion section. This is because Digit often fails to give virus defination updates of Anti Virus softwares and I see no point of repeating this demand every month. The virus definations should be included in each and every DVDs of Digit, each month. Why should we keep on requesting for such an important file?

Please give virus defination files of the important antivirus s/w every month. Make sure that its the first thing that goes into the CD/DVD. Other s/w can wait.

My suggestion list would be this:

1) Include more and more Developer Tools and Multimedia Tools

2) Start a new section in the CD / DVD and name it "UPDATES" and include virus definitions of all the major AV companies, Updates for the Firewalls, Definitions for Anti-Spywares and many such softwares

3) Provide latest updates for SW that are updated often such as Dreamweaver, M$ Windows (you can move the Autopatcher here), Flash, Norton Systemworks , and other such S/W !

When I need any software I have to search every cd/dvds. So I need a complete database and a powerful search engine. Before I send my ideas to Digit I found "Digit Software Archive". I installed it and start searching. But I found the stuffs for January and February 2006. What about the contents of the cd/dvds of the preveous years. When I make any sily mistake in the key words I found it that the search engine does not recognise it. Very poor seach engine. I hope it should be as powerful as Google.
Well, as it is in the bata testing verson it is manageble. You should develope it. Whre is the second verson? It should be in the March2006 cd. I want to make an active participation in the developement of it, but I need a certificate and some gifts if you plese with my support. :)

Read some of the old CHIP issues [ the name of your magazine ages ago ]. There was something special about CHIP that is missing in Digit.

PS - I am reffering to CHIP - the magazine DIGIT was called before and not the CHIP-INDIA that's in the stands these days ...

See i read pcmagazine and pcworld of the us on my computer,ofcourse download through bittorrent!
The one thing i like about them is their reviews of the products and other tech stuff!
I know you guys do a hell of the electronic items...but i think digit lacks behind in software reviews...
a primary function of a tech magazine is to guide users about new softwares and review some of the important categories like..
1.Backup
2.Security suites
3.email clients and junk control..
4.online privacy
5.and stuff which makes life better like firefox,download manager,rss clients...etc..
I am also impressed with your gaming review section....it was good last time in march edition....
i would encourage you to see these magazines which i mentioned and find technical stuff which u experts can see....

I totally agree with blackpearl regarding the monthly antivirus updates. :)
Please include monthly antivirus updates like McAfee/Norton etc. in the DVDs. I once read it in Digit magazine that the whole point of including softwares/updates in CDs was to reduce downloading burden on readers. So please include the antivirus updates regularly so that we don't have to download from the net. :D

16bit is gone, 32bit is leaving, since last 6 months Intel as well AMD are dumping 64 bit processors like there is tomorrow. M$ as well as Linux gurus are sitting leazzily with their x86_64 versions of os. I think being a prominant IT magazine and a trusted guide for me and other active readers, you should help us to test & taste of 64 bit arena.

Can begin your patron-ship in this segment by giving hot-served Fedora Core 5 x86_64 version in coming months DVD. I remember my own confusion/dilema when shifted from 16 bit to 32 bit. But finally resulted into better present. I hope whole reader community will support me.

Well, I agree completely with u guys too.
What I also suggest is that they should give the magazine in Seal-King type of plastic cover.
The current plastic cover they give is very sensitive & once ripped cannot be used again.
Currently what I do is, buy the Seal King covers from market & store the magazine in it.

Add search box on main page and each forum page with simple options as "search only this forum"/"search all forums" and/or "search all words"/"search any word"/"search exact phrase"... This will be kind of like quick search boxes...

Suggestion for the CDs
Adding Autopatcher every month will be useful... I understand that having 250 MB of the space used up for the same purpose maybe difficult... What if you carry the full version every 3 or 4 months and the update version in the other months? Also, it will be better to be on the CD instead of DVD because some people may not have DVD drives (there isnt one at my office, though I have one on my laptop)...
Promoting free software so that people become more aware of alternatives to piracy - on a rotation basis, every month have one section (say Multimedia or Internet) devoted to only freeware...
Color coding software names on the CD cover to identify freeware/shareware/adware/demos...
Sometimes (very rarely though), when I install a software mentioned as freeware on your CD, I find it comes with spyware... (I detect this after installation when they try to access the network and are caught by the firewall)... Some extra care may be taken while testing software as freeware or spyware...
Some of the smaller software may be provided as links that can be used for downloading...


Suggestions for the Magazine:
A small space for Programmers - rotate languages on a monthly basis, provide something for the novice and something for the advanced user...
A more detailed A-List on a regular basis (maybe once in 3 months or so)... Provide best performance, best value for high-range/mid-range and lower-end varieties of products...

Sure, I have BBand and I can download overnight anything I want since I have unlimited night time browsing... But thats not the case for more than half the readers... Many use Dialup and some may not even have internet connection...

Of course, you could have two different editions - one with CD/DVD and one without... But somehow I just dont see it as a good marketing strategy... Those with broadband connections can always get articles on the net too... I dont think the additional subscribers to mag-only will provide extra profit... Considering that maybe a third of existing subscribers also may downsize...

REGARDING PACKING OF CD/DVD:-every month digit supplies cd/dvd in a combo box of plastic.when i take out them from the box frequently.The cd/dvd develop very small cracks & it becomes really unsafe to run them in drive because of risk of breaking.it had happened with me 2 times.pls do something to this matter

When u give s/w for Linux please include a text file with a description of the s/ws so that it can be opened from linux. You provide these in the flash file which cant be opened from Linux, making it difficult to make out which s/w did what. I hope you solve this problem from the next issue.

I m a bit skeptical of the results (till now) of this month's Digit poll which asks "What is the actual Broadband speeed you get?". The result shows 60% of the people voted for 'above 64 KBps', but I doubt whether so many people has access to speeds above 512kbps. Most people confuse between KBps and kbps. I think it will be better if the units are changed to 'kbps' from 'KBps' to clear any confusion that may arise.

Its my utter displeasure to say that delivery service of DIGIT is going from bad to worse to TRASH as each month passes by. Its 15th June and i still havent recd the DIGIT Copy ! I wrote a mail to them on 13th abt this and they told me that they have dispatched the copy. Its 15th evening and no news of mag yet. There was a time when digit used to reach my home on last day of each month and now its already half of the month. They used to send us mail also abt the dispatch of mags but now they dont do it. Moreover i believe that they hv changed the courier and thats why i keep getting the mag late.

Do you guys get the mag on time or not ???

I can shamelessly say now that i am one of the most disatisfied customers of DIGIT and vows not to renew my subscription.

ok digit mag may be one of the oldset tech mags in India and it may be the most well known.
but i think chip mag is much better as it is better priced (100 bucks)
and also its one year subscription is jus 960 bucks. for 1200 bucks u get a 25 in one card reader too (wid 1 year subscription). ok i know digit gives u 15 issues for a 1 yr subscription but still chip is better priced. there r similar offers wid 2 yr and three yr subscriptions.

the main magazine contents in digit and chip are similar and both are equally gud.

however chip doesnt have soethin equal to Fasttrack which i think is a gr8 addon to digit. cheers 2 da digit team fr tht.

But chip does come wid one DVD and 2 CD's .
again similar contenet on both but CHIP gives more.

Anyway.
Lets hope that Digit improves and truly earns the no 1 SPOT

has anyone ever realised how digit is gonna pay their employees if they get money only from the magazine sales(which will be only enough for about the printing costs). Hence they HAVE TO put ads like that in order to make money and keep paying their staff... So, next time whatever be the thing, please never complain about the presence of ads. Of course, u may say that some ads are obtrusive, but remember, those ads are worth a little more than those pages filled entirely with ads, as these ads (within text) are more likely to be looked than others...
If u really feel that digit should not advertise in their magz, then Webmasters, please stop ads on ur sites which get u earn money from... other readers, please do not watch TV channels which show ads... (Speaking of the fact that Pepsi TV - a 24 hours ad channel is going to be launched!!!)

Just a suggestion:
Digit should start java/flash based chat rooms for forum users.
Not different rooms. Just 1 place.. where ppl can interact with other forum members without posting/messaging the members and waiting for their messages/post.

I personally think, it would be a good idea as guest users can join the chat room without registering as GuestXXXX nicknames and ask questions and get reply to it right away if any forum members are online.

Isn't it a good idea ??

And moreover i have seen many users registered here to ask 1 question, even before searching the forum for their answers. I think an online chat place would stop all that.

I have a few suggestions. i have been summing them up in my mind for some time to present them collectively.

It is spilled here:

MAJOR:
1. Add a new listing titled "Talent List" next to the "member list". users can specify there talents and choose them form a detailed list(containing of major catagories and minor ones in them). like "Linux->X.org", "Moddinng->LEDs", "Electronics->general", "Internet->PHP", "Programming->C#" and so on... People can select their 'talents' fromthe User CP. ALso the users can create new catogories/sub catagoties. To make it less crowded only display the catagory when a specific no of people have requested it, keep others on the backburner and show them only when a user specifically can find a suitable one while posting), this will provide automatic refinement". Now when a person posts he/she has options to select the problems catagory. This will trigger a flag, marked when the user logs in, just where u display "last logged in....." so if he wants to he can click there and see what threads/posts have requested his expertise.


2. Create a forum(a project management tool) where people can specifically discuss/develop their projects/ideas of thigs like Software, website devel, Modding, Publishing... etc. Here the Thread starter should have the same rights as mods/admins over his thread(thy can remove modify/delete other peoples posts and hide/unhide their stuff, add specific viewers only for specific parts etc). Remove/increase the photosize/attachment size and other small limitations from there.


3. Make a searchable "Product Showcase/Catalog". Here all kinds of products(software hardware ot anything) can be added by users with all the info abt it like developer,website,resoures,related thread in digit forum, likely price..etc. And it has ratings and subproducts. Like for eg a 'shelf' for The best PC under 40K. Now all uses can add procucts by name to it and rate it. so whatever is most rated will be displayed. so if people want to buy a pc in 40k they can just have a look there and get all info(also things like second best) This can have a huge portential obe enough people put in enought products and their views abt them.
Ask the digit team to add all products the rate/test to it too.



MINOR:
1. Put in some check so then when a user presses "backspace" in a thread it shows a pop up if the quick reply bos has some text in it. i have may times lost typed text by accidentially pressing backspace when the focus was on the webpage insted of the textbox.

2. Do something with the rep system to avoide backfiring. at present people can just give -ve rep to a person if he gives on to them. what is the point of that?

3. Add a print/save thread tool.which saves/prints in a simpler format. also add a download archive tool if a person want to.

4. Add a picture gallery and a video feed of the digit team at work. we digitians would love that. Also if some products(only the majour ones) can be tested online while we people watch ask questions. add a ticker to the forum to tell us abt the event.

I do not want to interrupt, but please consider my suggestion regarding the forum. As many of us have a GMail account, you would consider adding a "Contact via Google Talk" icon in our profile section in our posts.

Now one for the Mag, I see there has been quite funny contents in Digit, I would like to suggest to include a small Comic Strip regarding some tech jokes and some events occuring at your side (something like a comic digit diary). Also, its been a while since you have carried satisfactorily long Software reviews. Last months(July) review of...er..you know what, was good. I Expect to see more such reviews(not exactly the same products ;-)) in future reviews. Also including a poster of games is not a bad idea after all.

I would like to see the mags soft copy in the CD/DVD every month.

I am tryin to develop a s/w that would help search the file(s) for certain keywords or phrases. I feel this is necessary because, I have a coolection of around 5yrs of Digit Hard Copy and its really a task when I have to search for a topic which "I remember reading in 'one of the digit issues' !!!"

You have done a Good thing by providing cut-like pages for the T&T etc..
But, wot I would like is an automated FAST search to the required content and infact comparisions between the related articles amongst the Digit issue itself.

Though there is a README file in most of the archive installations provided, I'd suggest you write a simple instruction for installation and usage as .txt files and place em along with the archives, cause sometimes the default README tends to be geeky and people fail to understand to even install. And if there is no README, I feel giving it would have been a waste of space...

Please do not give any thought to this that when u guys used to publish CHIP way back in 1998-1999 the mag used to be very fatty. With the passage of time it has in keeping with the trends of modern times the magazine is becoming thinner by the day. And the advertisements are increasing. Most importantly all the advertisements are put on the odd numbered pages making it highly inconvinient to read the magazine. But as we all know here you people publish DIGIT to make money and money u should make.
So keep making money

Put in some game videos and Hindi and english movie trailers.Also decrease

it's great fun and it's free it's the open source in gaming.So instead of big talk why don't you become the india's 1st mag to give mods for games like gta series fifa,wwe raw,f1,etc.Once people know modding and know the difference they won't go for new versions of their games every now and then,thus reducing piracy.For eg-if anyone likes a game like fifa 2005 but finds fifa 2006 hard or different then he can mod fifa 05 and change the teams the graphics and many more.it'll give it a new look and your favourite gameplay remains as it is.
