I use Windows XP Professional on P4 2.0 GHz, 256 MB RAM machine. The OS automatically updates itself as it is always online.

I generally hibernate my system at the end of the day. But yeaterday when I tried to shut it down, it simply didn't !!!!! It even doesn't restart!!! It only Hibernates!!!! After a hard reboot also, the problem persists! What's wrong? Some virus or something else?

set the WU time in control panel... set it to the time when u usually go online...

i think the hybernation data on ur pc is corrupted...

try 2 hybernate the pc.... and restart... during boot press F8 and delete the current data and proceed to clean boot.... then again restart... it shud fix the problem... i think.

Disable the Hiberante option under Power options in control panel. This will remove the hibefil.sys file from the root partition. Now restart and see if it works...

I tried both, but it does not help! My problem is with Shutting Down and Restarting. Hibernation is already working properly.

Update your system for latest from Microsoft !
Next thing is that you have option of using connect online when go to internet and u need to turn that option off !

Check the eventviewer for any error messages from apps / system. It should give you some clue about which service / app is causing the problem. Also, try doing a system restore as a last resort....

It will prompt u to restart.

Well.. what error message does it gives you ..? Have you waited for sometime to let it shutdown ...? Maybe because of some services it takes hell lotta time to shutdown ...
like here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822738)

You can read this article (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/russel_02may13.mspx) too ..

try these

- do u log directly into ur account of get the welcome screen ?
- r u able to go to administrator acct from safe mode ?
- try creating another acct try
- choose default settings in bios . if u have power management option in bios disable it . else clear cmos
- under admintools services . disable automatic updates and ups for now .
- do u have any other apps thats running that might affect hibernation ?
- check with the m/b manufacturer site for this issue

My computer directly logs into my account (single user). I can shut it down only in Safe Mode logged in as Administrator. That clearly means that I'll have to create a new account and delete the old one. I know how to do that but is that the only solution? Can't this be repaired?

FastTrack's suggestion is also not bad, but who will pay me for the licenced softwares we've purchased for our lab? None of them will work on Linux! I don't know the compatibility status of "Wine" available in linux for drivers of frame grabber cards and other data acquisition systems.

BTW, if I click on shut down, restart or try to log off, Nothing happens at all. I've waited for hours. Now I'm so much confident that I can show it to anybody without saving any of my work going on!

guess new acct is the only soln . but is was nice to get a prob like this . anyway , lets not give up . the try these ;)

admintools -> local security settings -> local policies -> security options

- audit : shutdown system immediately if unable to log security audits
- shutdown : allow system to be shutdown without having to log on

user rights assignment ->
- shutdown the system
- in properties add ur user id

there should be a rating on the toughest probs faced here ;)

That's the spirit klinux, let us not give this up. I'm away from the computer with this problem so will try tonight and let you know about the result.

I could not find the answer to this question anywhere on the net over all the forums! But this type of questions should be kept in a different category called "CHALLANGES" in my opinion. What do you say?

Let's specifically invite some other friends for the problems which they have faced and were never solved and hence given up. Even 'digit' can publish these kind of problems to have ideas from those who are not members of this forum.

Creating a new user also does not help!!!!!

I have found that arbitrarily ending some processes through task manager allows my pc to shut down. I'll pin point the service and let you people know.

Option 1
Shut down hibernation feature by going to Display props>Screensaver > Power. Remove the tick for 'enable hibernation'. Now power off your pc. Works? then turn the hibernation feature on! No go?>>>>
Option 2
First of all get to Run> msconfig
Let it bare boot. That is use selective startup and tick off all unwanted services. See if the problem persists. If it doesn't, now is the time to go 'trial and error'!!
Option 3
See if the shutdown feature works form the task manager. Use ctrl + alt + del. From there use shutdown. If it shuts down, then you have a problem with your registry. You will have to rebuild the registry, for which, unfortunately you'll have to reinstall afresh.
