a boot cd is the one from which u can boot a computer without any OS installed
if u really have to format u`ll need the 98 boot disc if u need FAT file system
else u can directly format to ntfs from the xp boot cd which u have and then install the OS

First boot using windows 98 Setup CD, if u don't hv then create a bootable floppy in Windows 98 and boot using it.
And when u'll boot using CD or floppy, u'll enter into DOS mode, then type following command:
format C:\ and then press y, it'll format ur C: drive.
Do same for D: drive also:
format D:\ and press y.
Now goto folder, in which ur 98 Setup files r stored and type:
Setup
Now follow the steps and windows 98 will be installed :D
Now again boot using windows XP CD and install it on D: drive.
i have winxp pro ... if something goes wrong, will 98 boot cd/floppy work ??? ps: i have 98 boot cd/floppy ...

Yes!
U can boot using win 98 cd/floppy, then if u hv a dump (copy) of entire windows XP setup CD on ur HDD then simply nevigate to that folder and type command:
winnt.exe
It'll start windows XP setup, so u can repair ur windows :D
