I know that id ports it's games to Linux so you can get Quake 3 and Doom 3 for Linux. No idea about other companies.

most games based on the open gl platform(d3,q3 etc) are available for linux,mac.also hl1 based games like cs,
dod are also playable on steam.hl2 based games i am not sure.can anyone update me?

I have a live distro specifically made for gamers. Its full of games. Boot from the CD, play Linux games and shut down :) What that CD?

I've played UT2004 , Doom3 on Linux .... i think Xine is good for this purpose ....

I've Played gnu/Linux native versions of Doom 3, America's Army, Neverwinter Nights etc.

And some Win Games like C2k5(demo), Mafia etc using wine.

wine is not so stable with other applications...isnt there any other "made for linux" games?

If you meant games other than the above then you could always try OpenArena and stuff that comes with its repos. But most famous games except the recently released one works with either Wine, Cedega or Crossver Office.
