Simple!
Boot using win 98 CD and type command fdisk /mbr ( or using win XP cd and enter into recovery console and give command fixmbr )
Now u can safely remove linux partitions in XP.

And about changing FC from default OS, edit grub.conf file in /boot partition and change default entry with the label no. of windows.

Take a search at the forum for an instant answer. I have posted answer to this query at least 2-3 times. Some more people must have also posted.

I am not able to access the grub.conf file. It gives an restricted mark and displays' access denied'. What do i do now? Can i change it from the bootupscreen that comes up when i start my comp?

You need to be root user in order to be able to edit that file. Either login as root and proceed, or type su in a console and give the root password. In the file, you will see that there are many different OS's listed below. There will also be a line saying "default x", where x is the position of the OS which is to be loaded by default. Change this, and save the file.

1. If you just wanna uninstall it, just boot with Win98 cd and start compouter without CD rom support or whatever......... and in the command line, type in "fdisk /mbr" (note the <spacebar> after fdisk)..........
If you dont have a Win98 bootable, a bootable win98 floppy will also do.....
If you have a XP bootable instead, boot with it, and in the command line, type in fixmbr............................
2. Reboot
3. Now, to remove the Linux partitions and retirive disk space consumed by it, you can follow either one of the processes below
(i) If you have WIN98, then just boot with a bootable floppy and CD and type in fdisk............. I wont explain how to use fdisk, or my post will be really long......... Just identify linux partitions and remove them and create new partitions
(ii) If you have XP then boot into XP and Start>Run>compmgmt.msc and click on the logical disk manager....... Then, you'll see the list of partitions on your harddrive............. All of them will have volume labels(C:,D:,E: etc), but last three wont (common case).................. right click on one and select Unallocate and follow the same with each linux partition.......... After all Linux poartitions are unallocated, right click on it and create new drives and retrive disk space for Windows..........

Genereally no........... But it depends on the backup technique and utility
