November 2, 2008
Anil Kumble, India's Test captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket and will not play the last Test of the series against Australia in Nagpur. In 132 Tests, Kumble took 619 wickets, the highest among Indians and third in the all-time list (http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/ci/content/records/93276.html). He also led the team in 14 Tests, but struggled with the ball in 2008, taking 28 wickets in ten Tests at an average of 50.57.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni will lead India in the Nagpur Test.

2 senior players retiring. Means big trouble when India visits Pakistan.
But not the greatest ending for the career of the greatest spinner for India.

the unsung hero of Indian cricket!!!
India will always miss him ... atleast when matches are played on pitches with full of cracks and uneven bounce....he is the only person who can wrap a opposition in under 2 sessions!!

What trouble? :???:
Even Pakistan's team has undergone a revamp after retirements and ICL fiasco.
Our youngsters are rising to the occasion most of the time....
And the next series is against England

^^I know that the next series is against England and Pakistan cricket team is in shackles . But it seems you don't know how well Pakistan batsmen play against Indian team and only quality spinners can trouble them. Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra both are talented but experience is more important which both are lacking.
No problem will be there for Indian team in England and NewZealand as there pitches are made for fast bowlers, and Indian fast bowlers are in great form.
Hope Kumble gets 2-3 wickets in his final appearance on the cricket ground as a player.
Match over
Just 2 wickets in his last series. Very bad!!

You have noticed that youngsters have stepped up to the occasion more than once.Yes, it will be difficult to replace someone with the calibre of Kumble, but now it is inevitable. Just be positive :)
I guess that finger injury he sustained the day before yesterday put him in a real spot of bother......

I hope mishra may fill the huge vaccume left by jumbo. He was more than a player, a rare gem whose actions speak stronger than himself. India was lucky to have such a player whose performance not comment makes the headline!
Long live jumbo!!!

Best of luck Jumbo :)
He was a great asset to the team.http://gigasmilies.googlepages.com/41.gif http://gigasmilies.googlepages.com/41.gif http://gigasmilies.googlepages.com/41.gif
I felt a bit sad, but he made the right decision.
Some people were arguing over, that he should have retired playing the last test of the Border Gavaskar trophy.

His last 10 test performance is not good enough, he is getting injury too much, have fitness problem etc etc.... Right decision no doubt.
BTW, anyone know, will he play in the next IPL or not?

How can he miss it ?
Lotsa players cited physical problems for quitting but many of them played 20-20 which is more physically demanding due to money involve ;)

20-20 more physically demanding than test???
No Way, Dude..
Test is both mentally and physically most strenuous format of the game. But 20-20 may be higher intensity.(for a very short period of time, but fielding counts a lot).

20-20 is definitely more demanding and is paving way for the juniors.
For tests which is rather slow and u dont get to see heart thumping moments ... athleticism dont really matter much.
Batsmen need to occupy crease then rather .. But in 20 20 .. there is actually no time of settling in.Fielding side has to be on toes to stop the overflow of runs.
I read in Times Of India .. That Kumble said that since IPL is a contractual obligation he cant afford to miss it.In rather jumbled words he hinted that he will play in IPL Season 2.
