NEW DELHI: An under construction metro flyover collapsed near Shakarpur area in New Delhi on Sunday morning.
According to police sources, two people are feared dead and several trapped under the debris of the flyover.
A part of a metro flyover bridge that was under construction caved in at around 7 AM on Sunday at Shakarpur, near Laximnagar area in East Delhi, crushing several passing vehicles including a blueline bus.
Initial reports suggest that ten people have sustained injuries, while several are feared trapped under the debris.
The injured have been taken to Delhi government hospital and their condition is said to be critical.
The death toll is feared to rise as several vehicles could be seen trapped under the debris.
Delhi's transport minister AK Walia, who rushed to the spot said, "some columns supporting the bridge have come down, this is a grave tragedy...we will inquire what caused the accident."
Firefighter and metal cutting machines are employed in the rescue operations and attempts are on to rescue the trapped.
The entire area is being evacuated on fears of more parts of the flyover crashing down, which may cause more casualties.
Few months back, similar incident had injured two people, when a part of under construction flyover had crashed in another location in New Delhi.
