of course the icon size can b changed and it will help... check this out

also u can change the font size in XP after changing the resolution :

1. Right Click Desktop + Choose “Properties”
2. In the Properties Window click on the “Appearance Tab” at the top.
3. There in the font size u can have the size with which u r comfortable
