Google-branded tablet to compete with Kindle Fire: Report

Posted on 06-01-2012

Google is reportedly prepping a self-branded tablet PC, which will compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Citing sources from Google's upstream supply chain, Digitimes in its report says Google is working on a 7-inch tablet PC, which would not compete with the market leader iPad but the Kindle Fire. Also, the device will run on the latest Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

The news follows comments from Google's Eric Schmidt, who said in December that Google was aiming at the tablet market. Schmidt, however, did not talk about a self-branded tablet then, but triggered all sorts of speculation. It was speculated that the new tablet would be a part of Nexus brand. Adding fuel to fire, the latest Digitimes report suggests the Google tablet will retail for even less than the low-cost Kindle Fire tablet.

It's notable that Google has not confirmed these rumours yet. Moreover, the Digitimes pointed out that Google Taiwan had never heard of such self-branded tablet. But many believe that Google has seriously taken up the tablet business. After launching a tablet-specific Honeycomb platform, the company introduced Ice Cream Sandwich, which has specially designed for both smartphones and tablets. Google has already launched its first ICS smartphone, Galaxy Nexus. Would you buy a Google-brand tablet if the company intended to launch one? Let us know in the comments below!
