PROS

  • Dual SIM dual-standby
  • Three interchangeable backpanels
  • Motion sensor functionality

CONS

  • Sluggish interface
  • Mediocre keypad design & ergonomics
  • Cheap build quality

Summary

The lack of good keypad design and ergonomics is the major setback for such a basic budget phone. Also, its cheap build quality puts the Y95 in a spot of bother, when compared to better designed models like the Byond Q99, Fly MV135, iBuzz iQ-3, even though they sell at a slightly higher price of Rs. 3,500. If you are a music buff, you should strictly consider the likes of Fly MV135 or if you are a business professional you would want a decent QWERTY phone like the Byond Q99 or the iBuzz iQ-3. As the Wynncom Y95 fails to meet our expectations on more than one criteria, we strictly do not recommend it.

The Y95 is the latest entry into the list of youth-centric mobile phones launched into the market by Wynncom. All the models in this series are aptly code-named with the letter 'Y' followed by the model number, which represents the Y-series mainly focused at the youth. We had earlier reviewed the Y100 which didn't quite impress us with its pedestrian performance, unlike its stylish and expensive looks. We shall find out later in the review, if the Y95 is any better in terms of performance while implementing a rather simplistic design.

Look and Feel

The Wynncom Y95 is sleek and tall like its elder sibling Y100. It comes with a glossy white finish on the front and backpanels. The interchangeable rear panels - light grey and pink, provide you the privilege of match-making with your dress code. As this is the only major value addition to the feature set, we wished to have a choice of more than just two interchangeable backpanels. The cheap build quality of the battery cover and its lack of proper latch mechanism represent poor ergonomics. The glossy silver finish on the keypad adds a touch of class. However, the mediocre keypad design and its cheap build quality result in too much of flex or sideways tilting of keys. This actually hinders typing accuracy and speed particularly while messaging, which will surely disappoint the SMS freaks and the power users. The Y95 surely fails to do justice as a youth-centric smartphone with a sub-par keypad design coupled with a shoddy D-pad interface and lacklustre ergonomics.

Features

The two notable features that are worth mentioning are the STK (SIM ToolKit) and the gesture based motion sensor functionality. The STK allows you customise the dual SIMs with individual settings for Airtel Live. Meanwhile, the motion sensor feature allows one to change the wallpaper or an MP3 song or a video during playback by just a sideways flip of the phone. However, the one notable omission is the lack of pre-installed motion sensor games. Another feature that really distracted us, was the vibrating alert which seemed louder than normal and more distracting than the ringtone itself.
