Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8 a few months after consumers had scooped up the Lumia 900 (and other first-generation WP7 phones), along with the unfortunate news that WP7 devices would not get upgraded to the WP8 moniker. Much rage and disappointment later, Microsoft has finally come forth stating that Windows Phone 7.8 is here to stay for a long while.

Just to be clear, (most) current Windows Phone 7 devices are still on version 7.5 of the software. The 7.8 update should be rolling out for them soon, having reportedly reached the RTM stage. Microsoft's Windows Phone corporate vice president Terry Myerson said we will learn more about Windows Phone 7.8 in the coming weeks.

Myserson further took to the time to show appreciation to all those adopted the Windows Phone devices, saying “I would expect both platforms to exist for quite some time, from a global point of view. Windows Phone 7.8 devices will span much lower price points than Windows Phone 8 devices, initially, and given the application compatibility across the platforms, it makes the ecosystem stronger to have more device and more price points. We value every 7 and 7.8 customer we have; we'll continue to work for them as well but it is true that Windows Phone 8 is our future platform.” There’s a reassurance in there too for all you early adopters.

While the 7.8 update for current-gen Windows Phone devices is yet to get a release date, we know that the HTC and Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 devices are going to be hitting the Indian market by the end of this year.
