TDSAT stays DoT order on 3G roaming pacts

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has held back the DoT order to end the 3G roaming agreements between the telecom operators. The tribunal body asked the telecom ministry not to rush to a “coercive" action on banning the 3G agreements until its next hearing, which is scheduled to be held on January 3.
Earlier, the telecom firms moved the TDSAT against the DoT order to end the 3G agreements. The DoT had issued the order after the TRAI and law ministry unanimously said that the 3G roaming agreements between the telecom firms were illegal and could cause monetary losses to the government. The government move, however, received harsh criticism from the telecom operators, who went on to threaten to surrender their 3G licenses.
Crticising the government move, Bharti Airtel said that banning the 3G roaming pact and similar actions could dent the credibility of the government and would have negative impact on the telecom sector.
