In an effort the boost the popularity of 3D mobile games for its Optimus 3D smartphone (check out our hands-on), LG has announced a new application that will help game developers easily convert their 2D offerings to 3D ones. Called the 3D Game Converter, the software will be introduced at IFA 2011 trade show in Berlin this week.
According to LG, over 50 compatible 2D games can be easily and automatically converted to 3D using the tool. Other, not-so-compatible OpenGL games can also receive the same 3D treatment, with a little bit of manual supervision. The resulting 3D games will probably also be compatible with other mobile 3D devices, like the Sharp Galapagos and the just launched HTC Evo 3D.
Describing the 3D Game Converter, LG’s Dr. Henry Nho said: “LG’s 3D Game Converter automatically recognizes the depth information based on the location of each object and separates the 2D graphic images for each eye. Using the existing depth information, the 3D Game Converter generates two different images — one for the foreground and one for the background.”
The 3D Game Converter tool is expected to release along with a slightly refreshed version of Optimus 3D, in October this year. Customers can expect 50 additional titles to choose from by the end of the year.
In other, related news, and another way to boost the 3D content available for its 3D smartphone, LG has tied up with National Geographic for a host of 3D image and video content. More details will be revealed at the IFA 2011 trade show.
