Google I/O 2012: Project Glass skydiving demo and more
Google introduced many new products and services at the Google I/O event this year.
Project Glass, Google's ambitious augmented reality headsup display, was showcased by none other than Sergey Brin, in the form of a Google+ hangout session. The hangout was being conducted between Brin and four other skydivers who had put on Google Glass. The skydivers were in a plane located many miles up in the air and after a brief banter with Brin, they broadcasted their entire dive from the plane to the roof of the Moscone Centre, where Google I/O was in progress.
Never in the history of keynote speeches have we heard these lines before a product demo: “This can go wrong in 500 different ways," said Sergey Brin, just before asking the crowd if they were ready to see a demo of Glass to roaring applause.
This demo showcased the video streaming capabilities of Project Glass, and it was not bad at all considering the circumstances under which it was being demoed. The user gets to see exactly what the wearer is seeing via the Hangouts.
As if this wasn't enough, there were stunt bikers sporting Google Glass and doing their stunts, thereby broadcasting their vision. They then passed on a parcel which was handed to them by the skydivers to a group of rapellers, who rapelled down the building. The parcel was then handed over to some more stunt bikers, who finally delivered it to Brin on-stage. Check out the video below and be prepared to be blown off.
Speaking about Google Glass, Brin said that they had a camera, a processor and lot of memory to store information, alongwith an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a compass.According the lead designer of Google Glass, the device weighs less on your nose than many sunglasses and it's placed slightly above the eye, so as to not distract the wearer. It fits easily over other glasses.
Finally the Google Glass Explorer Edition was announced. Presently only the developer pre-order is available for US based I/O attendees at USD 1500. Google plans to ship Glass sometime next year.
