I got lucky. I only waited three hours for an iPhone 4, and I was early enough to avoid the blazing heat that beat down on the same line later that day. My brother was supposed to meet me there and wait for his phone, but he decided to go later. I got to my local mall at 5:30AM, and stumbled over to where the lines would be forming outside the Apple Store. The lines had already formed. Taking my place behind 50-odd Apple faithful in the reserve line, I strained to see the end of the other, non-reserve line, which ran the opposite direction down the open corridor. I couldn't see the end of it.
The last picture I ever took with my 3GS. The tiny people are the non-reserve line. Somewhere off frame, the line ends.
The temperature has been unbearably hot and humid in the Mid-Atlantic, and Thursday was going to break 100 degrees (F), but this early it was still comfortable. My new found friends in line struck up conversations, played with our iPads (there were a lot of iPads) and soon to be replaced iPhones. The guy in front of me had an original iPhone that literally died the night before. Now that's fate.
The store opened at 7am with a flourish. Dropping the curtains that hid the store windows, the crowd erupted in a crazy cheer. There in the windows, was the new iPhone. I couldn't help but laugh as we slowly worked our way forwards. The local Starbucks provided coffee and pastries, a fast food restaurant handed out free breakfast sandwiches, and Apple themselves gave out bottled water. The line had continued to fill in, there were at least 100 more people behind me now, and still growing. The other line? Even longer.
By 8:20m I was in the store, and a quick 10 minutes later, I was out the door with an iPhone 4, a bumper, and the desire to get home and sync this beast immediately!
My brother showed up at 10:30am for his reserve, and waited four hours in the baking sun. I had warned him.
Now, let’s talk about what everyone was waiting for.
In the Box
The iPhone 4 retails for $199 16GB, $299 32GB, both requiring a two year contract with AT&T. (Editor's note: the iPhone 4 is expected to retail in India for Rs 35,500 for the 16GB and Rs. 41,500 for the 32GB version). Apple will offer it in black and white, although white is not yet available. I purchased the 32GB model.
You get the usual inside the box: a charger, sync cable, and a pair of Apple earphones. That’s it.
