We find many interesting software/programs on the internet everyday. But how can we be sure if they can be trusted or not? We could run an anti-virus scan, but that is never 100% accurate. Even if the software is safe to run, the software could fill in your windows registry, and end up slowing down your PC, or sometimes conflict with some other program. Then there are those which do not get uninstalled neatly, leaving bits of files and registry entries in your system, reducing your computer's efficiency further. This is too big a risk to take, especially for applications which you probably won't even run twice. So, what if there was a way that would let you try out software without actually having to install them on your PC? In this way, it would keep no trail of its existence after the...

Web services that let you share your favorite links, videos, blogs, and media are a dime a dozen, but not all of those services give you the ability to really share those things along with what you thought of them. Even fewer give your recipients the ability to converse with you about what they thought after reading the article or watching the video you forwarded to them. Glass, on the other hand, is a new Web service that allows you to take snapshots of the interesting things you see and read on the Web and share them with friends in an interactive and conversational way, as opposed to broadcasting the things you find interesting to an impersonal group of people.Glass is new and in private beta, and the developers behind it were kind enough to let us give the service a shot. Even...

There's nothing more annoying than a coworker's noisy, unattended computer, and there's nothing more embarrassing than coming back to your computer to hear your cubicle neighbors complain that noise from your idle system has been disturbing them, whether it's music you left playing, e-mail alerts, or other system sounds. With System Silencer, you can make sure that your computer shuts up when it goes idle, and you can toggle a number of other features to take effect once your system realizes you're gone.System Silencer is a tiny app that runs quietly in the background and only performs action on your computer when it's been idle for a period of time that you specify. The utility can be especially useful for saving battery life on notebook computers, or just making sure that the music...

Video game classes at major colleges and universities aren't particularly new: they can be valuable teaching tools in many cases, depending on the course and the game. Making a single course all about the ins and outs of one particular game however is a little odd, but that's exactly what professors at the University of Florida are doing with EME2040: 21st Century Skills in StarCraft. The course will focus on build techniques and strategies, as well as how the skills that you learn playing the game can be applicable in the real world where you may be forced to manage multiple priorities and activities with limited resources. Sound familiar? Don't rush to enroll just yet though, the course does have a pre-requisite, and is only open to students who have "basic knowledge and...

Apple already had an Apple TV device which was available for $299 at launch, however they have now announced a new Apple TV device which has undergone a fundamental shift in functionality, form factor, and purpose. While the new device will be available at a much lower price of $99, this doesn’t come without its sacrifices.First of all the new device is all black and much smaller, which means it will fit in much better in your setup. It features minimal connectivity options, which just power, ethernet, HDMI, and optical audio connections. The device has the usual polish and appeal of any Apple device.Unfortunately, Apple TV only supports HD videos of up to 720p just as the original version did. Apple claims this is being done to maintain a balance between bandwidth and quality. Of...

RSS feeds, according to us, can be termed as one of the finest information bearers out there. They are one of the neatest little workarounds for having your own customized newspaper, or a cure for the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder of those who want all updates/news on their favourite sites, in an uncluttered manner, without having to check to the relevant sites every 30 seconds. RSS Owl, at first sight, resembles the old IMAP mail clients, which epitomizes the essence of RSS Feeds – it is like you are being mailed the stories as they come, with the readability of a document. And like mails, all news items are marked ‘read’ or ‘unread’. You can assign labels, organize news for later reference, create a copy (PDF/DOC/RTF), and more. One of the pleasant...
